Trevor Larnach (click on image to make larger)

Twins minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week honors have been announced and  AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos outfielder Trevor Larnach and High-A Ft. Myers Miracle right-handed pitcher Jordan Balazovic have been named.

In five games for the Miracle, Larnach hit .412 (7-for-17) with two home runs, five RBI, four walks and a 1.289 OPS. The 22-year-old was selected by the Twins 20th overall in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of Oregon State University. After signing with Minnesota the left-handed hitting Larnach started with rookie league Elizabethton and finished the season with Low-A Cedar Rapids. This year he started in High-A Ft. Myers and was promoted in mid-July to AA Pensacola. At the present rate on the fast track I would expect Larnach to at least make an appearance for the Twins in 2020.

Entering its 27th year, the AFL features six teams that are composed of players from all 30 Major League organizations. It offers the unique opportunity to gauge young talent against competition that usually is superior to what they experienced during the Minor League season. The rosters for this year’s AFL, are loaded with future stars. The group features 18 players ranked on MLB Pipeline’s list of the Top 100 Prospects.

Although I have not been to any AFL games the last few seasons I have attended a number of them in the past and it is a special treat to watch these young up and coming stars play ball. The price is right and often you will see more scouts than you will see paying fans. It is indeed a unique experience that I would recommend you partake in, if the opportunity presents itself.

Twins minor league players of the week – Caleb Hamilton & Bryan Sammons

The Twins have named High-A Ft. Myers Miracle infielder Caleb Hamilton and Low-A Cedar Rapids Kernels left-handed pitcher Bryan Sammons minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Caleb Hamilton

The 23-year-old Hamilton played in four games for the Miracle, hitting .462 (6-for-13) with two doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and five runs scored. Hamilton was the Twins 23rd round pick out of Oregon State University in 2016 and was selected as a shortstop. The Twins turned Hamilton into a catcher in 2017 and that is now his primary position although you can also find him at third base and first base. Last year he caught, pitched an inning and played every position but center and right field. In 185 career games Hamilton has a .211 batting average.

Bryan Sammons

The 6’4″ lefty Sammons made one start for the Kernels on Monday against Beloit, pitching 8.0 shutout innings with five hits allowed, one walk and five strikeouts. The 23-year-old Sammons attended Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.  In 12 starts this season Sammons is 4-4 with a 2.69 ERA and has allowed just 56 hits in 67 innings while striking out 58 batters. Sammons gave up 5 earned runs in his first start of the season but has given up 3 or less in every star since. Sammons was an eighth round Twins selection in 2017 and signed for a reported $10,000. Looks like the Twins might have gotten a bargain here.
