Twins minor league players of the week – Wiel & Laweryson

The Twins have named AAA Rochester Red Wings 1B/OF Zander Wiel and Rookie-Elizabethton right-handed pitcher Cody Laweryson Twins minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Zander Wiel

In seven games for the Red Wings, Wiel hit .370 (10-for-27) with four doubles, three home runs, seven RBI, three walks and a 1.271 OPS. The right-handed hitting Wiel plays primarily first base but spends some time in the outfield too. In 518 PA’s this season in Rochester Wiel hit 24 home runs, knocked in 78 and had a .255 batting average. On the down side Wiel struck out 158 times. The 26-year old Tennessee native was the Twins 12th round selection in 2015 and signed for a reported $140,000. 

 

Cody Laweryson

Laweryson made the start on Monday vs. Greeneville, pitching 6.0 shutout innings with three hits allowed, no walks and 15 strikeouts. The Twins drafted the 6’4″ right-handed Laweryson in the 14th round just last season and gave him a $80,000 signing bonus. Not many big leaguers from Maine, let’s see if Cody can be the exception.

Twins minor league players of the week – Wiel and Sands

The Twins have named AAA Rochester Red Wings first baseman/outfielder Zander Wiel and A+ Ft. Myers Miracle right-handed pitcher Cole Sands as Twins minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Zander Wiel

In seven games for the Red Wings, the 26 year old Wiel hit .433 (13-for-30) with two home runs, five doubles, eight RBI, 24 total bases and five runs scored, including five multi-hit games. The Tennessee native was drafted by the Twins in the 12th round of the 2015 draft out of Vanderbilt University. This marks Wiels’ third career weekly honor, first since Sept. 4, 2016. Wiel is 6’3″ and goes about and hits and throws tight-handed. Wiel has advanced through the Twins organization and had a taste (15 games) of AAA ball last season and has spent all of this year in Rochester.

 

 

Cole Sands

Sands made one start for the Miracle, throwing 5.0 no-hit inning with six strikeouts last Sunday against Jupiter. Sands, just 21 was a fifth-round selection in the 2018 MLB draft out of Florida State. Sands, a right-hander started his pro career this year in A ball with the Cedar Rapids Kernels and has advanced to A+ Ft. Myers. This is his first weekly honor. Sands signed for a reported (Twins Daily) $600,000 with the slot value being $330,400.

Twins minor league players of the week – Zander Wiel & Bailey Ober

The Twins have named AA Chattanooga Lookouts outfielder/first baseman Zander Wiel and Low-A Cedar Rapids Kernels right-handed pitcher Bailey Ober minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week.

Zander Wiel

Zander Wiel played in seven games for the Lookouts, hitting .333 (8-for-24) with one double, two triples, one home run, three RBI, five walks and a .448 OBP. Wiel is in his fourth season of pro ball and has jumped up a league each season. Although he has not shown the power this year as he has in the past, he is hitting .306 which is way above his career average of .264.

Bailey Ober

We don’t get many back-to-back winners but this week we have one. Bailey Ober, who also won this award last week, made one start for the Kernels, coming on Thursday (which was his 23rd birthday) vs. Ft. Wayne, pitching 6.2 shutout innings with five hits allowed, one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Twins Minor League Players of the Week – Zander Wiel and Tyler Duffey

This weeks Twins minor league players of the week are first baseman Zander Wiel of the Chattanooga Lookouts and Tyler Duffey.

Zander Wiel

This past week Zander Wiel appeared in six games and had 9 hits in 21 at bats with four doubles, two home runs, six RBI and scored five times posting a batting average of .429 and had a 1.405 OPS. For the season, the 25 year-old Weil is hitting .370 with 20 hits in 54 at bats.  Zander is about 6’3″ and goes about 232 and bats and throws right-handed. 

Weil, a Tennessee native is now in his fourth season of pro ball was drafted by Minnesota in the 12th round of the June 2015 amateur draft out of Vanderbilt University where he played on two CWS teams and has one championship on his resume. Weil is not currently rated as a Twins Top 30 prospect by  MLB.

Tyler Duffey

Tyler Duffey who has pitched for the Twins 2015-2017 and had a rough spring training started the season with the AAA Rochester Red Wings. This past week Duffey appeared in two games, pitched 6.2 innings and allowed no runs, just two hits, and struck out 10 while walking just one batter. Did I mention he is 3-1 this season with 14 strikeouts in 11 innings without allowing a single earned run? The Twins called Duffey up to the big club yesterday. Hopefully Duffey can keep it going with the Twins in the long relief role.
