2023No Twins game today, it is the All-Star break.

2022 – Fans could watch today’s game on YouTube, it marks the third time the Twins play on YouTube this season. The first came on May 25, as the Twins lost to the Tigers 4-2 in 10 innings, the second came on June 15 at Seattle as Luis Arraez went 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI, earning YouTube Player of the Game, following a 5-0 Twins win.

MIRANDA SENDS CREW PACKING: The Twins beat the Brewers at Target Field by a score of 4-1, splitting the two-game series. Joe Ryan was the starter but took a ND, allowing one run on two hits in 5.1 innings pitched. The bullpen combined for 3.2 scoreless innings, while Jhoan Duran was named the winning pitcher, the first victory of his big league career. Jose Miranda had three of the Twins’ 10 hits, including a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning off Josh Hader. Tt marked Miranda’s eighth home run this season and his second walk-off hit this season (other: July 2 vs. Baltimore). The attendance was 38,802, marking the club’s first sellout at Target Field this season. Box Score

2021 – No Twins game today but the All-Star Game was played in Colorado. The ASG was originally scheduled to be played in Atlanta but politics got involved and the game was moved to Colorado.  For the first time in All-Star Game history, Los Angeles Angels player Shohei Ohtani served as the starting pitcher and lead-off batter. The match-up also featured the 200th home run of the All-Star Game, which was hit by Toronto Blue Jays player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Nelson Cruz (DH) and Trevor Rogers (reliever) were the Twins representatives as the American League won 5-2, it was their eighth win in a row. Rogers did not appear in the game. Box Score

2020 – The Minnesota Twins and all of baseball would be taking the day off for the All-Star game that was to be played at Dodger Stadium if all the games this season would not have been postponed/cancelled due to COVID-19. 98 Twins games missed so far. Twins Summer Camp 2020 is underway at Target Field and CHS Field. Byron Buxton doesn’t need a Friday the 13th, Monday the 13th works just as well. Often-injured center fielder Byron Buxton was carted off the field during an intra-squad scrimmage today at Target Field after injuring his left foot while closing in on a fly ball. The next day his injury was diagnosed as a midfoot sprain and he is day-to-day (shocking, I know) and his readiness for the season opener on July 24 is unknown.

Buxton carted off the field after injury.

2019 – The Twins beat the Indians by a score of 6-2, winning the series, their 18th of the season (18-8-4). Jake Odorizzi (11-4) was the starter and winner, allowing one run on three hits in 5.1 innings pitched. The offense recorded 11 hits (with Jorge Polanco getting three of them) including home runs by Max Kepler (22 & 23) and Jake Cave (2). Kepler homered off Indians starter Trevor Bauer for the fourth and fifth time this season, the first player in baseball history to homer in five straight at-bats versus one pitcher in a single season. Byron Buxton made a great diving catch coming in on a ball to centerfield and ended up hurting himself and had to leave the ballgame. The Twins are currently at their high-water mark of 25 games over .500 for the second time this season (47-22 through games of June 15. Box Score

2018 – On Friday the 13th the Twins jump out to a 4-0 lead over the visiting Rays in the first and after three innings lead 8-1. When the game ends the scoreboard shows the Twins with 11 runs and the Rays with 8 runs. Jake Odorizzi lasted just 4.1 innings allowing six runs on eight hits and but it was Trevor Hildenberger, the fifth of seven pitchers that the Twins used in the game that Twins official scorer Stew Thornley declared to be the winning pitcher. According to Stew’s Facebook post it was the first time he ever got to impose Rule 9.17 (c). The Twins big bats belonged to Jake Cave who was 3 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBI and scored twice and Robbie Grossman who is finally starting to get hot joined him with 3 hits in 3 at bats with 2 doubles and one RBI and 1 runs scored. 2015 – No game today, All-Star break.

2014No Game Today, All-Star break. Target Field hosted the Home Run Derby as part of the 85th Midsummer classic. Yoenis Cespedes was the winner hitting a total of 28 home runs…second place Todd Frazier hit 10 total, Jose Bautista hit 14, Giancarlo Stanton hit six, Adam Jones hit seven, Troy Tulowitzki hit six, Josh Donaldson hit three, Justin Morneau hit two, Brian Dozier hit two and Yasiel Puig hit none…the contest started late due to rain.

2012 – Friday the 13th did indeed turn out to be unlucky for Twins lefty Francisco Liriano. Liriano struck out 15 batters at Target Field but allowed a grand slam home run to Jonny Gomes in the fourth inning which led to a 6-3 loss to the A’s. Liriano is the first pitcher since 1900 to register at least 15 strikeouts and allow a grand slam in the same game. Liriano registered the ninth 15+ strikeout performance in the Twins/Senators franchise history, but he is the first to do that in a losing effort. Josh Willingham hit two home runs for Minnesota in a losing cause. Box Score

2011 – No game today, All-Star break.

2010 –  No game today. The 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game was the 81st midseason exhibition between the All-Stars of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). The game was played at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, the home of the American League Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The National League won the game 3–1, ending a 13-game winless streak. The 2010 All-Star Game marked the first time major changes took place since the 2003 decision to begin handing home field in the World Series to the winning league. The designated hitter became a permanent fixture of the game regardless of site (a change which became more noticeable when the game was next played in a National League park – in 2011 at Chase Field in Phoenix). But, continuing with past precedent, whereas fans voted the American League starter in, as they did in previous years when an A.L. city hosted the game, the National League’s manager continued to name his team’s DH before the game from the list of reserves (player-elected and manager-chosen). Other changes included having the rosters of each league team increased to 34 players. Pitchers who started the regular-season game on the Sunday immediately before the game became ineligible to pitch in the game, and were replaced on the roster (this rule would be invoked for three players selected for the American League squad – Trevor CahillCC Sabathia and Jered Weaver). As with any player ineligible or unable to play, each was still recognized as an All-Star. Finally, a modified re-entry rule also made its debut (though saw no usage in this contest). In addition to the existing injured catcher rule, the manager was now allowed to select one position player to re-enter a game in the event that the last available position player at any position is injured. Twins All-Stars this year were Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau and both were starters. Box Score

2009 – No Game today, All-Star break.

2005 No game today, All-Star break.

2004 – No game today. The game was played at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, the home of the Houston Astros of the National League. The game resulted in the American League defeating the National League 9–4. Twins closer Joe Nathan was the sole Twins player at the game and he pitched one scoreless inning of relief. Box Score.

1999 – No game today. The game was held at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, the home of the Boston Red Sox of the American League. Fenway Park was chosen as host because the owners at the time were planning to build a New Fenway Park in a few years but were unable to get the project off the ground in time for the game. The closing of Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Michigan, along with the move of the Milwaukee Brewers to the National League and the delay in the construction of Miller Park also played a role in the Red Sox being awarded the game. The pre-game ceremonies featured introductions of nominees for the All-Century Team, including longtime Red Sox outfielder Ted Williams. Walter Johnson was a great Washington Senators pitcher is tied to the Minnesota Twins because the Senators became the Twins in 1961. The game resulted in a win for the American League by the final score of 4-1. Box Score

1994No game today, All-Star break.

1993 – Minnesota’s Kirby Puckett homered and doubled to win the MVP award in the AL’s 9-3 victory in the All-Star game at Camden Yards in Baltimore. In a game which will be best remembered for John Kruk’s “non at-bat” against fire-baller Randy Johnson, in which the Phillies’ first baseman flails at the Big Unit’s fastballs in a comical manner. Kirby Puckett and Rick Aguilera were the Twins all-star participants. Box Score

1988 – No game today. All-Star break.

1987 – No game today, All-Star break.

1982 – The 53rd All-Star game was played at Olympic Stadium (Stade Olympique) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, home of the Montreal Expos of the National League. It is notable for being the first All-Star Game ever played outside the United States. The game resulted in a 4–1 victory for the NL, and Cincinnati Reds shortstop Dave Concepción was named the MVP. Kent Hrbek was the lone Twins All-Star representative in his only all-star appearance. Box Score

1981 – MLB on strike on what would have been the All-Star game. The strike was eventually settled and the ASG was moved to August 9.

1976 – Catcher Butch Wynegar becomes the youngest Minnesota Twins player to ever appear in an All-Star game when he appears as a pinch hitter for Luis Tiant in the 7th inning at the age of 20 years and 121 days at Veterans stadium in Philadelphia in front of 63,974 baseball fans. Wynegar gets walked by John “The Count” Montefusco. The following Twins were All-Stars: Rod Carew as a starter and Butch Wynegar as a reserve. The NL beat the AL 7 to 1. Since the Twins came into existence in 1961 the AL has won just 2 All-Star games, one of the two games played in 1962 and the 1971 game. The honorary captains were Robin Roberts (for the NL) and Bob Lemon (for the AL). Starting with this All-Star Game, both “O Canada” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” would be sung as part of the annual pregame ceremonies. Box Score

1975Rained out in New York. The Twins were in New York for the last time this season and were expected to complete the suspended game from yesterday (July 12) and then play the regularly scheduled game. It was determined that the games would be played on July 20 when New York was in Minnesota.

1971 – In an All-Star Game featuring home runs by Johnny Bench, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Reggie Jackson, Frank Robinson, and Harmon Killebrew, the AL triumphs at Tiger Stadium in Detroit 6-4. It is the only AL All-Star victory between 1962 and 1983. Jackson’s HR goes 520 feet. The following Twins were All-Stars: Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Leo Cardenas, and Jim Perry. 1966No Game Today, All-Star break.

1965 – Willie Mays’s HR, 2 walks, and 2 runs scored pace the NL to a 6-5 All-Star Game victory in Metropolitan Stadium. Juan Marichal pitches 3 scoreless innings to earn game MVP. The NL took the lead over the AL for the first time since the All-Star series began. The Twins had 6 players that participated in the game, Earl Battey, Mudcat Grant, Jimmie Hall, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, and Zoilo Versalles. It just so happens this was the first major league game that I ever attended and there were more future Hall of Famers in this game then you can shake a stick at. Attendance – 46,706. Listen to the radio broadcast of the game, Herb Carneal is one of the announcers. Box Score (Includes some nice pictures of the All-Star starters)

1964No Game Today – After losing a doubleheader to the Los Angeles Angels with the second game going ten innings yesterday, the Twins had to fly to Winnipeg to play the Northern League All-Stars. The Class A Northern League All-Stars led by Twins minor league 19 year-old protegé Dave Boswell who pitched 3 innings while striking out six Twins for the All-Stars beat the Twins 5-2 in front of a full house of 7,600 fans.

1961 – The Twins make a quick trip to Cleveland to make up a May 31 rain-out and see if they can beat the only team they have not registered a win against this season. The Twins are 0-5 versus the Indians so far but they take a quick 5-0 lead against Indians starter Mudcat Grant when he walks Lenny Green but then retires Billy Martin and Harmon Killebrew on fly balls. Bob Allison draws another walk bringing up Jim Lemon who grounds one to third but the throw to second is off-line and the bases are loaded for Earl Battey who draws a bases loaded walk bringing in the Twins first run. Recent acquisition Ted Lepcio who has just two hits in 16 AB’s but both have been home runs, makes it three hits, all home runs with a grand slam to deep left field. Jose Valdivielso is retired for the final out but the damage is done, all five runs are unearned. Mudcat survives the inning and ends up going eight innings allowing seven runs but only two are earned on six hits and six walks and takes the loss. Pedro Ramos got his sixth win of the season against ten losses but was not terribly effective going 7.1 innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. The final score was 9 to 6 for the Twins even though they were out hit 11 to 8. Jim Lemon (10) and Harmon Killebrew (27) also contributed home runs. Lepcio’s GS was the Twins seventh of the season. The 35-50 Twins are now off to Detroit to take on the first place Tigers. Box Score
