2023 – The Twins lost to the Angels by a score of 1-0 at Target Field snapping a three-game winning streak. Sonny Gray (8-8) was the starter and loser, allowing one run on four hits in 6 innings pitched, with no walks and eight strikeouts. The only difference in the game was a Jo Adell solo home run in the fourth inning off Sonny. The offense recorded five hits, walked twice, struck out 10 times and did not record an extra-base hit. The 10 strikeouts gave the Twins 1,596 on the season, tying the major league record, set by the Cubs in 2021. Kyle Farmer and Christian Vázquez each had two of Minnesota’s five hits. Box Score

2022 – After completing their eight-game, seven-day roadtrip with a record of 1-7 (1-4 at Cleveland and 0-3 at Kansas City), the Twins lost to the Angels at Target Field by a score of 4-2, dropping their fifth-straight game and slipping a season-low five games under .500. Louie Varland made his third major league start opposite Shohei Ohtani, allowing two runs on three hits in 5 innings pitched with six walks and seven strikeouts. Emilio Pagán pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief with no hits allowed, no walks and three strikeouts. The Twins offense had just five hits, including two from Jake Cave. Box Score

2021 – The Twins started off their final homestand of the season in fine fashion with a 7-2 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays at Target Field. Michael Pineda (8-8) was the starter and winner, allowing two runs on eight hits in five innings pitched with one walk and two strikeouts. The bullpen combined to pitch four scoreless innings of relief with three hits allowed and three walks. Ralph Garza Jr. stranded all three runners he inherited in the eighth inning and earned his first career save with 1.1 perfect innings to finish off the win. The offense recorded 13 hits, three from both Mitch Garver and Nick Gordon. Gordon hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, the fourth of his career, and added a run-scoring single in the seventh for a career-best four-RBI. Box Score

2020 – The Twins had a 6-0 lead and starter Kenta Maeda had a one hit shutout going through the first five innings but in the sixth he gave up two singles and then Miguel Cabrera clobbered a three run blast and all of a sudden it was a 6-3 game, Maeda finished off the sixth inning with two strike outs but his day was done after 94 pitches (29 in the sixth alone). The Twins scored another run and entered the ninth with a 7-3 lead and Rocco Baldelli sent Caleb Thielbar out in the ninth to finish it off. Thielbar however; got into a bit of trouble in the ninth when after retiring the first batter he gave up a single, then got a strikeout for out number two and then gave up a double putting runners at second and third with two out and Miguel Cabrera on deck. Rocco quickly went to the bullpen again and brought in Sergio Romo and on a 1-1 pitch Cabrera hit his second three-run shot of the game and all of a sudden the Twins lead had shrunk to just one run. Romo retired the next batter to finish off the Tigers and the Twins had a 7-6 win, their fourth W in a row and a half game league over the White Sox but the White Sox were still playing and had a game in hand. Maeda (6-1) was credited with the win. Jake Cave had the big bat going two for four with two home runs (doubling his season total), two runs and 3 RBI. Eddie Rosario (13) also hit a home run and had two runs and two RBI. The Twins now have a day off before the Reds come to town. Box Score

2019 – No Game Today

2018 – The Twins kept the Oakland A’s from clinching a spot in the postseason on their watch, as Kyle Gibson threw 7 1/3 strong innings for his ninth win, Joe Mauer reached yet another milestone and Ehire Adrianza had an impressive day both defensively and at the plate. Jake Cave hit his 12th home run of the season and had two RBI. Trevor May notched his first career save and I would guess if the Twins don’t acquire a closer in the off-season that May will fill that role in the future. It helped the Twins to a 5-1 win on Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum to avoid a three-game sweep and keep Oakland’s magic number at 1 to clinch a Wild Card spot. In their final road game of the season after back-to-back walk-off defeats, the Twins also managed to avoid making dubious history, as they finish with 14 walk-off losses, which is one short of the Major League record. Twins final road record for the season is 29-52, OUCH! Box Score

2010 – No game today, scheduled day off.

2007 – After 11 seasons, All-Star and free agent-to-be Torii Hunter steps to the plate for the final time in the Metrodome as a Twin. The fans cheer wildly, hoping for a final bit of glory from the long time fan favorite. Instead, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen orders him intentionally walked. This has nothing to do with game situation; Guillen is just thinking of creating a bigger Twins-White Sox rivalry by not letting the star have a moment of glory. Hunter re-signs with the Minnesota Twins in 2015 after spending time with the Angels and Tigers. The White Sox score first but the Twins cross the plate the next seven times as the Twins beat the White Sox 7 to 1. Kevin Slowey has a nice game and goes 7 innings and allows one run on four hits while striking out 9 and walking none. Rookie first baseman Garrett Jones hits his first career big league home run. Michael Cuddyer has two singles and four RBI. Box Score

2003 – The Twins clinched the AL Central for the second straight season; the 4-1 win over Cleveland marked the 10th win in an 11-game winning streak. Twins starter Kenny Rogers comes within one out of pitching a complete game but needs some help from Eddie Guardado for the final out as he allows eight hits and one run and gets win number 13 for the season. Shortstop Cristian Guzman hitting ninth is 2 for 2 with a home run, a walk, scores two runs and knocks in 1 run. With the victory he Twins clinch their second consecutive Central Division title when they beat Cleveland 4-1 in the Metrodome and watch as the White Sox lose to the Yankees and the Royals lose to the Tigers. 2002 – No Game Today

1995 – Chicago White Sox outfielder Lance (1 Dog) Johnson goes 6 for 6 with 3 triples (and 3 singles) in a 14-4 win over the Twins at the Metrodome. Robin Ventura goes 5 for 6. Twins starter Jose Parra didn’t have much, allowing 11 hits and 8 runs in 5.2 innings (108 pitches) but then again Twins relievers Erik Schullstrom and Oscar Munoz didn’t fare much better. The Twins big bat of the day was catcher Matt Walbeck who was 3 for 4 with a double, a run scored and RBI. Box Score

1993 – No Game Today

1991 – No Game Today

1990 – The Twins score five in the first and one in the second at the Dome and hold on to beat the Texas Rangers. Gary Gaetti hits a grand slam off the Rangers Charlie Hough for his 200th career HR, as the Twins win 6-4. It comes 9 years and 4 days after his first ML homer, also off of Hough. In addition to Gaetti’s theatrics, Puckett and Gladden also get three hits each with Danny getting a double and a stolen base in the mix. Scott Erickson gets the win for the Twins with 100 pitches in 7.2 innings while allowing two runs (zero earned). Box Score

1978 – The KC Royals jump out to a quick 3 zip lead and hold on to beat Minnesota 3-1 as Paul Splittorff wins game number 19 on the season. Roger Erickson pitched a complete game for Minnesota allowing two earned runs on five hits but came out on the short-end of the stick. Twins lead-off hitter and rookie outfielder Dave Edwards was 3 for 5 with a home run, run scored and RBI. It was his only home run of the season. Box Score

Lyman Bostock, Jr., an outfielder for the California Angels was shot and killed in Gary, Indiana. He remains the only major league baseball player murdered during the baseball season. Lyman was an outfielder for the Minnesota Twins from 1975-1977. There are other posts on this site about the Lyman Bostock tragedy.

1977 – No game today, Twins versus Milwaukee Brewers game postponed on account of wet grounds at the Met. Game rescheduled for September 25 as part of a DH.

1974No game today, scheduled day off.

1971No game today, scheduled day off.

1967 – Dave Boswell has a bad start at Met Stadium lasting just 2.1 innings while giving up 4 hits and 6 walks and the Twins lose to the NYY by a score of 6-2. The bullpen finally gets some action, their first in six games as they have not pitched since September 17 in Chicago. The Twins only had five hits and one of those was a pinch-hit two-run home run by Carroll Hardy off Yankee starter Fritz Peterson. Hardy only appeared in 11 games for the Minnesota Twins and had 9 PA’s and this home run is the only one he hit in a Twins uniform. Long before Bo Jackson became a household name, South Dakota had its own version of a football/baseball phenom in Carrol Hardy.  Box Score

1965 – No Game Today, scheduled day off.

1963 – No Game Today

1961 – Game one was the make-up game for yesterday’s rain out against the Senators. The Washington Senators went with Claude Osteen who was recently acquired from the Cincinnati Reds and was making his first appearance in a Senators uniform. Osteen made his big league debut at the age of 17 for the Reds back in 1957 but still had not won a regular job with them nor had he won a big league game. The Twins went with veteran starter Pedro Ramos. After six innings it was 2-1 for the Senators but then in the seventh inning with two out Ramos walked the bases full and then gave up a grand salami to Jim King putting the Senators out front 6-2 and he was headed for the showers. The Twins scored twice in the bottom of the inning and once more in the eight making it a 6-4 ballgame chasing Osteen but it was too little and too late and the Twins ended up losing the game 6-4. Osteen got the win, his first major league victory but it would be a win over the Twins down the line in the 1965 World Series that Twins fans would remember even more. Ramos who gave up his 39th home run of the season (to King) took the loss and his record now stands at 11-19. The Twins had just five hits in the game. Box Score game one

Game two was a totally different game as Camilo Pascual pitched a two hit shutout as the Twins won the game going away 10-0. The first Senators hit was a slow roller that hit the first base bag and first baseman Harmon Killebrew had no shot at it. The second hit was by Minnesota native Bob Johnson was a double in the ninth inning. The local paper speculated that had Bud Zipfel slow roller not hit the bag and been fielded by Killebrew for the out,  Johnson would not even have had a chance to bat in the ninth inning. But whose to say? The Senators also committed five errors in the game, three by shortstop Bob Johnson. Pascual who won his 15th game against the same amount of losses leads the league in strikeouts and is tied for the league lead in shutouts with eight. Killebrew hit the Twins only home run, number 44 on the season. Billy Martin had a big day with three hits including a double, three runs scored and a RBI. Box Score game two
