October 22- This Day in Twins History

2004 – The best lefty for the 2004 season, and consequently the winner of the 2004 Warren Spahn Award going annually to the best left-handed pitcher in Major League baseball, is Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins. Santana is also the first foreign-born winner of this award that is presented by the Oklahoma Sports Museum of Guthrie, OK.

1991 – In the top of the 12th inning Rick Aguilera pinch-hits for Mark Guthrie with the bases loaded and two-out  in game three of the 1991 World Series and becomes the first pitcher to be used as a pinch hitter since Don Drysdale did so for the Los Angeles Dodgers in game two of the 1965 World Series against the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately the Braves beat the Twins 5-4 in 12 innings and Rick Aguilera is pinned with the defeat at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Dan Gladden goes 3 for 6 with a triple and run scored and  Kirby Puckett and Chili Davis hit long balls but it was not enough. The Twins use a World Series record 23 players in the game. Box Score

1987 – The Cardinals take a 3 games to 2 lead in the 1987 World Series when they beat the Twins in St. Louis 4-2 winning three straight home games. Bert Blyleven takes the loss as Twins bats remain quiet. Gary Gaetti goes 1 for 4 with a triple that plates two Twins runners. Box Score

1971 – The Twins acquire outfielder Bobby Darwin from the Dodgers and give up outfielder Paul Powell.

1969 – Bill Rigney is named as the Twins fifth manager replacing the very popular Billy Martin. So popular in fact that many fans start a Twins boycott.
