December 18 – This Day in Twins History

2018 – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they will honor Joe Mauer by retiring his uniform number 7 during the 2019 season. Minnesota Governor Dayton announced that today is “Joe Mauer Day” though out the great state of Minnesota.

2013 – The Twins trade catcher/outfielder Ryan Doumit to the Atlanta Braves and procure minor league LHP Sean Gilmartin. Gilmartin never played for the Twins but did get to the majors with the Mets.

1990Six potential NL expansion cities. “The National League announces the six finalist cities for the two expansion clubs that will join the league in 1993: Buffalo, Denver, Miami, Orlando, Tampa-St. Petersburg, and Washington, DC.”

1903The AL makes 1B and 3B coaches permanent. “The AL votes to allow coaches at third base and first base at all times: till now, only one coach was permitted except if there were two or more base runners.”
