2023 – The Twins lost to the Guardians at Target Field by a score of 4-2, evening the series at 1-1. Pablo López (9-7) was the starter and loser, allowing three runs on eight hits in 6 innings pitched, with three walks and five strikeouts. The offense recorded seven hits, two from both Max Kepler and Michael A. Taylor. Taylor hit his 20th home run of the season and Royce Lewis hit his ninth home run, and third in as many days. Carlos Correa went 0-for-4, snapping his 19-game on-base streak. Minnesota also went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Carlos Correa has now grounded into a double play 27 times, which leads the league and is one shy of the Twins single season record.  Box Score

2022 – The Twins beat the visiting Boston Red Sox at Target Field by a score of 4-2, extending their winning streak to four games while earning their 16th come-from behind victory this season. Dylan Bundy was the starter but did not factor into the decision, allowing two runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Caleb Thielbar (1.1 IP), Jhoan Duran (1.0), Griffin Jax (1.0) and Jorge López (1.0 IP) combined to pitch 4.1 one-hit innings of relief, with no walks and six strikeouts. Thielbar (3-2) got the win.The Twins trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning until Gio Urshela hit a two-out bases clearing double, giving the Twins a 4-2 lead. It marked Urshela’s 100th career double and 21st of the season – good for second on the team. Jhoan Duran tossed 1 scoreless inning with one strikeout. His four-seam fastball was recorded at 103.4 MPH, the fastest recorded pitch of his career. It was also the fastest pitch thrown by a Twins pitcher in the Statcast era (2015-present), tied for the third-fastest pitch thrown in the major leagues this season (trails Jordan Hicks – 103.8 and 103.7). His seventh inning splinker registered at 100.8 MPH, the first off-speed pitch thrown over 100.0 MPH in major league history. The Twins are now 4-0 on this six game homestand.  Box Score

2021 – The Twins lost to the Brewers at Target Field by a score of 6-2. Griffin Jax (3-3) was the starter and loser, allowing six runs on six hits (2 home runs) in 5 innings pitched with three walks and five strikeouts. Ian Gibaut made his Twins debut, pitching 3 scoreless innings with three hits allowed. The offense recorded just six hits, two going for extra-bases — a Miguel Sanó home run (23) and a Jorge Polanco double (27). Sano who struggled earlier this season and was moved to a platoon role for awhile has been hot of late. Miguel Sanó has reached base safely in 26 of his last 28 games, dating back to July 26, in that span, he has posted a .390 on-base percentage (30 hits, 18 walks). The Twins attendance today was 26,186 and that pushed them over the million mark to 1,020,916. The Twins had a day off scheduled for tomorrow before the Chicago Cubs come to town but instead they get to fly to Detroit and play the Tigers at Comerica Park to make up a July 16 rainout. 2020 – With both teams wearing Jackie Robinson’s number on their backs at Comerica Park the Tigers and Twins faced off in the new normal, a seven-inning doubleheader. In game one the Twins sent out Randy Dobnak and the Tigers sent out winless starter Matthew Boyd. When the action stopped 2 hours and 11 minutes later the scoreboard showed that the Tigers had 16 hits and 8 runs and the Twins had 4 hits and 2 runs. Dobnak allowed six runs and 12 hits in 4.1 innings as everything the Tigers hit seemed to find a hole as the Tigers scored in five consecutive innings. Boyd who came into the game win zero wins and an 8.48 ERA was finally able to get a win with six innings of work allowing two runs on 4 hits. One of the four Twins hits was a Nelson Cruz home run, number 12 on the season. Dobnak took the loss bringing his record to 5-2 as his ERA leaped to 3.12 from 1.78. Game one box score

Game two did not go much better from the Twins perspective as again they finished the game with just 4 hits and 2 runs while the Tigers had 5 hits and 4 runs. The Tigers started rookie Tarik Skubal and he earned his first big league win with five innings of work allowing two runs on three hits. The Twins decided on a “bullpen” game and five Twins pitchers only gave up five hits but two of the hits were two-run home runs by Jeimer Candelario off Trevor May and Miguel Cabrera off Tyler Duffey (1-1) who ended up taking the loss. Nelson Cruz who hit his 13th home run of the season in game two was the only Twin with more than one hit in either game. All in all it was a tough day for Minnesota as they started the DH in first place and finished in third place. The 0 for 3 with RISP in game one and 0 for 2 with RISP in game two tells you everything you need to know. The Twins have now lost four in a row. Nelson Cruz homers in both games and in both games during a doubleheader versus Kansas City on August 15, according to Elias, make Cruz the second player in club history to homer in each game of a doubleheader twice in one season, joining Harmon Killebrew in 1966, who homered in both games on August 28 at Chicago-AL and again on September 30 at Baltimore. 2019 – The Twins win their fifth straight game when they sweep the White Sox with a 10-5 win in which they had a 9-0 lead at one point. José Berríos (11-7) was the starter and winner, allowing three runs on seven hits in 6 innings pitched (101 pitches). Randy Dobnak earned his first career save with 3 scoreless innings giving the Twins 9 different pitchers with Saves. Twins batters recorded 16 hits, three from C.J. Cron, who doubled and homered. Jake Cave recorded his second career multi-homer game, both coming in the last week. After the three home runs the Twins now have 261 homers on the season. They have also set a new MLB on the road home run record with 141 besting a 2001 Barry Bonds Giants record set in 2001 and there is a month left to play. The Twins head for Detroit with a 82-51 record and a 3.5 game lead on the Indians. Box Score

2018 – After dropping the first game of their nine-game road trip the Twins beat the Cleveland Indians 4-3 evening the season series to 9-9 with one game to play. Kohl Stewart was the starter but did not factor into the decision, allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Stewart has allowed exactly three runs in each of his four starts with the Twins but has not pitched more than 4.2 innings in any of his games. The Twins put up nine hits, including catcher Willians Astudillo’s first career home run in the third inning. Eddie Rosario recorded his 11th three-hit game of the season. The Twins bullpen did a nice job with 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Box Score

2014 – The Twins find their visit to Oriole Park at Camden Yards is not pleasant as they lose 9-1 and only get four hits in the game as Miguel Gonzalez and Brian Matusz shut them down pretty well. Twins starter Trevor May was ineffective allowing 8 runs in 4.2 innings and took his fourth loss of the season although he did strike out eight. Trevor Plouffe hit a home run that accounted for the Twins only score. Trevor Plouffe’s solo home run in the seventh inning would not appear to be notable at first glance, especially since the Twins would muster no more offense in their 9-1 loss at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. That long ball however; was indeed historic – it was the 10,000th home run hit by the Twins/Senators franchise. They were the last of the 16 pre-expansion franchises to reach 10,000 home runs. The Twins have contributed 7,214 of those homers while the Senators hit 2,786. By the way, Plouffe also hit home run number 9,999. Box Score

2012 – The Twins trounce the Seattle Mariners 10-0 at Target Field out-hitting the Mariners 17-2 and beating up on Jason Vargas and two other Seattle relievers in the process. Twins starter Samuel Deduno had one of his better games and pitched 7 shutout innings allowing two hits, no walks and struck out seven while notching his fifth win of the season. Trevor Plouffe was 2 for 4 with a homer run and double which were good for 4 RBI. Josh Willingham was 2 for 3 with a homer and 2 RBI. Joe Mauer was 3 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI. Box Score

1996 – The Twins whip the Milwaukee Brewers 6-1 at County Stadium behind Frankie Rodriguez‘s complete game in which he threw 123 pitches and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks but most importantly, just the one run and notched his 13th win of the season. Roberto Kelly supported Rodriguez by going 2 for 4 with a home run, a run scored and 2 RBI. Box Score

1994 No Game Today

1992 – Four banks of lights went out at the Metrodome on Saturday night at 8:06 pm after 2 1/2 innings of play but by then the slumping defending world champion Twins and starter Bill Krueger were already down 6-3 to the New York Yankees and rookie right-hander Bob Wickman who was making just his second big league start.  After a 23-minute delay, play was resumed but Wickman went 8 innings and claimed his first big league win. Greg Gagne was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and Scott Leius was 1 for 3 with 1 RBI. Box Score

1985No Game Today

1984 – Both teams have identical records of 69-63 when the Twins match-up with the Boston Red Sox at the Dome. Red Sox starter Oil Can Boyd shows the Twins fans how it should be done as he pitches a complete game two-hit shutout in 2 hours and 15 minutes while striking out six and walking four. Twins starter John Butcher lasted just 5.2 innings and allowed all four runs for the loss. “Oil Can” has to be one of the best nicknames ever. Box Score

1967 – The Orioles beat the Twins 4-3 at the Met. The Twins out hit the O’s 10-3 but still found a way to lose. Twins starter Dave Boswell who pitched 7.1 innings allowed the Orioles to score the 4 runs on just 3 hits and 8 walks. By the time the game was over Twins pitchers gave out 10 free passes. Russ Nixon was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. Ted Uhlaender also chipped in with three hits. Box Score

1963 – What a power packed day and sadly the attendance for this double-header was just 2,161 fans. In a double-header with the Washington Senators in DC Stadium the Twins take both games. In the first game the Twins win 14-2 and hit eight home runs in the process. Jimmie Hall, Rich Rollins, Bernie Allen, and Bob Allison each hit one out while Vic Power and Harmon Killebrew each hit two out of the park. Power was 4 for 6 with 2 home runs, scored 3 times and had 4 RBI. Lee Stange pitched a complete game allowing two runs on 8 hits and upped his record to 8-4. Hard to believe you can play this kind of a game in 2 hours and 23 minutes.

The Twins score ten runs in the first five innings of the second game and trounce the Washington Senators 10-1 and hit 4 more home runs along the way and this game is over in 2 hours in 19 minutes. This time Zoilo Versalles, Jimmie Hall, Bernie Allen, and Harmon Killebrew hit’em out. The Twins starter in this game, Dwight Siebler was appearing in just his second big league game and was making his first big league start and he pitched a complete game allowing just 3 hits and 1 run while walking two and striking out four. I should mention too that he was 1 for 5 with the bat and scored one and knocked in one.

1961 – The Minnesota Twins went over the million mark in attendance as 40,118 fans, the largest crowd to ever see a game at Met Stadium watched the Twins and Camilo Pascual (12-13) shutout the New York Yankees 3-0 on four hits, two walks while sending nine back to the dugout with their tails between their legs. Yankee starter Ralph Terry (11-2) took the defeat. The Twins scored their first run in the third inning on a single by Lenny Green. Then with Billy Martin at the plate Green stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Elston Howard. Green then scored on a sac fly by Martin. The Twins scored their final two runs in the sixth when Bob Allison and Jim Lemon singled and Earl Battey doubled them home to make the score 3-0. No Yankee runner reached third against Pascual as he posted shutout number six on the season putting him in a tie with Steve Barber of the Orioles for the league lead. Yankee bombers Roger Maris with 51 homers and Mickey Mantle with 46 homers didn’t get to increase those numbers today. The game lasted just 2 hours and 17 minutes. The Yankee lead over the Detroit Tigers drops to just 1.5 games. After the game was completed, all ticket stubs for the game were thrown into a barrel and three names were drawn to represent fans number 1,000,000 and 1,000,001 and 1,000,002, each of these fans was given a new car courtesy of the Minnesota Twins and their “cheap” owner Calvin Griffith.
