21st Century Twins pitching starts

The 21st century started on 1/1/2001 so the first quarter century has passed at the end of 2025. So lets take a look at what Minnesota Twins starters have started the most games for the Twins in that time period. I’m not going to look at their wins or losses, just how many times they have been able to take the bump to start the game. I will also try identify which pitchers were drafted by the Twins and which were not.

It turns out the leader of the pack is Kyle Gibson who pitched for the Twins between 2013-2019 and had a record of 67-68 with 845 strikeouts in 1,087 innings with a 4.33 ERA. A Twins 1st round pick (22nd overall) in 2009 and debuted on 6/29/2013.

D means he was drafted by the Twins and the number after it indicated the round. Trade means he was acquired in a trade, FA means signs as a free agent, Rule 5 means the Twins drafted him in a Rule 5 draft, and amateur FA means Twins signed him as an amateur free agent.

Keep in mind that some pitchers career’s started in the previous century so their number may look a bit strange.

Twins minor league players of the week are Woods-Richardson & Rodriguez

The Minnesota Twins have announced that Triple-A St. Paul right-handed pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson and High-A Cedar Rapids outfielder Emmanuel Rodriguez have been named Twins minor league Pitcher and Player of the week for week 23.

Emmanuel Rodriguez a Santiago, Dominican Republic native was signed by the Minnesota Twins as an undrafted free agent on July 2, 2019. Rodriguez was a top 10 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 international prospects list for 2019-20 when the signing period opened up in July of 2019. The Twins were all in, giving the toolsy outfielder $2.75 million to sign. MLB Pipeline currently has Rodriguez rated as the 48th best prospect overall and has Rodriguez as the Twins 3rd best prospect behind Walker Jenkins and Brooks Lee. You can learn more about Rodriguez here. Rodriguez has won this award three times earlier this season and he seems to be another in the long line of Twins left-handed sluggers.

Rodriguez, 20, played in four games for the Kernels, hitting .333 (3-for-9) with one triple, three RBI, six walks, a .600 on-base percentage, a .556 slugging percentage and a 1.156 OPS. On the season he is slashing .240/.400/.463. Although he does have 134 strikeouts in 455 PA’s he also has 16 home runs, 55 RBI and 20 Stolen bases.

Twins minor league players of the week are Morris & Martin

The Minnesota Twins have announced that Triple-A St. Paul outfielder/infielder Austin Martin and High-A Cedar Rapids RHP Andrew Morris have been named Twins minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week for week 20.

Andrew Morris was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 4th round of the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft from Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX). Morris signed with Minnesota for a reported signing bonus of $500K.

Morris, 21, made one start for the Kernels on Thursday versus Wisconsin, allowing two runs (1 earned) on six hits in 5 innings pitched, with no walks and seven strikeouts, earning his sixth victory of the season. Morris promoted to the Cedar Rapids Kernels from Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on July 24. on the season Morris has 14 starts with 69.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 65 hits (4 HR’s) and struck out 72 with a nice 1.105 WHIP.

SPRING FLING: Today the Twins will play the 28th and 29th of 32 scheduled Grapefruit League games as the Twins and Braves will play a pair of split squad at Hammond Stadium and CoolToday Park in North Port. After today, one more game will be played at Hammond Stadium and two more games will be played on the road. The Twins will complete the exhibition season with a 1:05 pm (ET) game in Bradenton against the Pirates on Tuesday, March 28. After the game, they will fly to Kansas City, hold an optional team workout on March 29 then begin a three-game, four-day series at Kauffman Stadium from March 30-April 2. Rocco Baldelli announced to the media how the starting five will open the season: for the Kansas City series – RHP Pablo López on Thursday, March 30 , RHP Sonny Gray on Saturday, April 1, RHP Joe Ryan on Sunday, April 2. For the Miami series – RHP Tyler Mahle

Kenta Maeda made his final official spring appearance in relief, allowing two runs on three hits in 5 innings pitched, with five strikeouts. Twins prospects Edouard Julien and Emmanuel Rodriguez both went 2-for-4 with a home run, as Rodriguez’s three-run jimmy jack gave the Twins a ninth inning lead and eventual victory.

YESTERDAY’S RECAP: The Twins and Baltimore Orioles tied, 5-5, in Sarasota last night. Twins entered the top of the ninth down by two runs and scored one on Danny De Andrade‘s RBI single. With runners at the corners and two outs, De Andrade stole second base and Ben Ross stole home to score the game-tying run. Dennis Santana then worked a one-two-three ninth inning to secure the tie. Joe Ryan made the start for the Twins and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, with two hits allowed and four strikeouts.

Today the Twins will played the 15th of 33 scheduled spring training games (32 Grapefruit League contests and one World Baseball Classic exhibition)…after today, nine more games will be played at Hammond Stadium and seven more games will be played on the road.

FARMER AT THE FORT: Kyle Farmer is in his first spring training with the Twins, after being acquired via trade from Cincinnati last November, is hitting .385 (5-for-13) with one double, one home run, four RBI and two runs scored in six games so far. Twins are his third organization (Los Angeles-NL – 2013-18 & Cincinnati – 2019-22), was Cincinnati’s Opening Day shortstop in 2022. Led the Reds in games (145), multi-hit games (36), four-hit games (3), hits (134), doubles (25), total bases (203), RBI (78) and starts at SS (97). The Twins now have 63 active players in camp (26 non-roster): 31 pitchers (11 non-roster), eight catchers (6 non-roster), 12 infielders (5 non-roster) and 12 outfielders (4 non-roster), plus two players on the 60-day Injured List.
