Twins minor league players of the week are Morris & Martin

The Minnesota Twins have announced that Triple-A St. Paul outfielder/infielder Austin Martin and High-A Cedar Rapids RHP Andrew Morris have been named Twins minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week for week 20.

Andrew Morris was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 4th round of the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft from Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX). Morris signed with Minnesota for a reported signing bonus of $500K.

Morris, 21, made one start for the Kernels on Thursday versus Wisconsin, allowing two runs (1 earned) on six hits in 5 innings pitched, with no walks and seven strikeouts, earning his sixth victory of the season. Morris promoted to the Cedar Rapids Kernels from Fort Myers Mighty Mussels on July 24. on the season Morris has 14 starts with 69.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 65 hits (4 HR’s) and struck out 72 with a nice 1.105 WHIP.

Twins announce 2023 Spring Training invites

The Minnesota Twins announced today that 25 players on minor league contracts have been invited to major league spring training in 2023.

Joining the Twins will be nine pitchers: left-handers Danny Coulombe and Evan Sisk; right-handers José De León, Randy Dobnak, Blayne Enlow, Cody Laweryson, Patrick Murphy, Austin Schulfer and Brock Stewart; six catchers: David Bañuelos, Jair Camargo, Chance Sisco, Grayson Greiner, Chris Williams and Tony Wolters; seven infielders: Andrew Bechtold, Michael Helman, Austin Martin, Brooks Lee, Aaron Sabato, Elliot Soto and Tyler White; and three outfielders: Willi Castro, Mark Contreras and Ryan LaMarre.

Of the 25 players invited to camp, 13 have major league service time: Willi Castro (Detroit), Mark Contreras (Minnesota), Danny Coulombe (Los Angeles-NL, Minnesota and Oakland), José De León (Cincinnati, Los Angeles-NL and Tampa Bay), Randy Dobnak (Minnesota), Grayson Greiner (Arizona and Detroit), Ryan LaMarre (Boston, Chicago-AL, Cincinnati, Minnesota, New York-AL and Oakland), Patrick Murphy (Toronto and Washington), Chance Sisco (Baltimore and New York-NL), Elliot Soto (Los Angeles-AL and Minnesota), Brock Stewart (Los Angeles-NL and Toronto), Tyler White (Houston and Los Angeles-NL), and Tony Wolters (Chicago-NL, Colorado and Los Angeles-NL).

Twins pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Wednesday, February 15, while position players are scheduled to report on Sunday, February 19. The first full-squad workout is scheduled to take place on Monday, February 20.

Twins shock everyone with their Carlos Correa signing

News broke just after midnight that the Minnesota Twins had signed free agent shortstop Carlos Correa to a $105.3 million three-year deal with opt outs at the end of each season. The deal has not been confirmed by the Twins ballclub but Correa has confirmed it. Twins fans were shocked and amazed as was I with the signing this morning.

After the Twins acquired shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa from Texas a few days ago and less then 24 hours later traded him to the Yankees, most Twins fans were baffled. Then news came out that the Twins were interested in FA shortstop Trevor Story and fans were excited but days went by and nothing happened until this mornings breaking news about Correa. I don’t think there was a single fan in Twins Territory that thought that the Twins would even consider going after Correa.

Even if Correa was to leave after just one season via his opt out it would give Royce Lewis and Austin Martin more time to develop and give the Twins more time to determine if either one could be a long term answer to the shortstop job. In the mean time it will be fun to watch Carlos Correa, the 2015 ROY, two-time All-Star and last years Gold Glove winner play shortstop in Minnesota. If you are looking for something to be critical of, it would be that he has just played more than 110 games twice in his seven big league seasons.

The FA signing of Correa was the latest in a series of moves made by Falvey and Levine in the last week that included trades with the Rangers, Yankees, and Reds. When you watch a Twins game this season in person or on TV you may need a scorecard to identify the players. I would say that we will see more moves before the season starts on April 7 when the Twins face the Mariners at Target Field.
