The Minnesota Twins have announced that Double-A Wichita infielder Brooks Lee and High-A Cedar Rapids right-handed pitcher Alejandro Hidalgo have been named Twins minor league Player and
Pitcher of the Week for week five.
Brooks Lee was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 1st round (8th) of the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (San Luis Obispo, CA). Lee, whose draft slot was estimated to be worth $5.4 million, received a signing bonus worth $5.675 million. Lee’s scouting report is interesting and you can see it here. MLB Pipeline has Lee as the Twins top prospect and currently rated number 26 in MLB overall.
Lee, 22, a San Luis Obispo, California native hit .571 (8-for-14) with four doubles, three walks and a 1.504 OPS in four games for the Wind Surge this past week. On the season, Lee is hitting .290/.350/458 and all but one of his games has him as a shortstop.
The Angels signed Hidalgo in July 2019 as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela. He wasn’t highly sought after in that international class, and the Angels signed him for $30,000. Due to the pandemic, his professional debut didn’t come until 2021, when he pitched seven games in rookie ball. Minnesota traded Gio Urshela in November 2022 to the Angels for Alejandro Hidalgo, a teenage pitching prospect. At the time of the trade, he ranked as the Angels’ number 22 prospect per MLB Pipeline. Hidalgo is off to a good start in the Twins organization and is rated at the Twins 23rd best prospect. You can see more additional info on Hidalgo by going here.
This past week, Hidalgo, 19, made one start for the Kernels on Wednesday at South Bend, pitching 5.1 scoreless innings, with three hits allowed, one walk and nine strikeouts. One thing I like about Hidalgo is that he gives up fewer hits each season than he does innings pitched but he does need to improves his control as his 13 walks in 18 innings this season indicates. Batting average against is a nice .194.
