How did the 2019 Twins hitters compare to other Twins teams?

2019 Minnesota Twins

We all know that the Bomba squad could hit home runs, after all, they hit an MLB record 307 of them in 2019. But just for fun here in mid-winter let’s take a look and see who Rocco Baldelli’s boys ranked as compared to the other 58 Minnesota Twins teams going back to 1961. Those folks over at Baseball-Reference.com or going to help us do just that.

  • Second in team wins with 101, the 1965 team won 102 games
  • First in runs scored with 939 (5.80 per game), the 1996 Twins scored 877 runs
  • Seventh in hits with 1,547, the 1996 Twins had the most with 1,633
  • Fifth in doubles with 318, the 2002 Twins hit 348 two-baggers
  • Near the bottom in triples with just 23, only two (2013, 2018) Twins teams hit fewer
  • First in home runs with 307, the 1963 Twins are second with 225 long balls
  • First in RBI with 906, The 1996 Twins had 812 RBI
  • Dead last in stolen bases with 28, the 1997 Twins stole 151 bases
  • Fourth in strikeouts by batters with 1,334, the 2013 Twins went down swinging 1,430 times
  • 23rd in walks with 525, the 1962 Twins walked 649 times
  • 13th in batting average at .270, the 1996 Twins hit .288
  • First in OPS at .832, the 1996 Twins were second at .782
  • First in total bases with 2,832, the 2003 Twins had 2,440
  • Sixth fewest in GIDP with just 101, the 2018 Twins only hit into 80 but the 1996 Twins hit into 172 GIDP
  • First in HBP with 81, the 1996 Twins were second at 65
  • 58th in IBB with just 21, the 2013 Twins had just 20
  • 35th in LOB with 1,115, the 1974 Twins left 1,262 base runners on the pond

2019 was an interesting and fun season for Twins fans but when all was said and done they still did not win a single playoff game. The goal is to win the final game of the season and the Twins didn’t accomplish that goal but hopefully they can improve on that in 2020.
