The time is here for Falvey and Levine to step up

The Twins have just returned from a road-trip that saw them win one of nine games. If they look at the Sports page this morning they will see that they have a 35-48 record, are in third place in the weakest division in baseball and are 12 games out of first place.

The Twins have been a huge disappointment this season but these kinds of things have happened in the past and will happen again, it is baseball. Back in 1962 and again in 1963 the Twins won 91 games and then in 1964 they won 79 games before bouncing back in 1965 to win 102 games and advance to the World Series.

The young studs the Twins had back in 1982 were 60-102 and never won more than 81 games until they went to the World Series in 1987 when they won a grand total of 85 games. The 1990 Twins won 75 games before winning 95 in 1991 and again going to the World Series. I am not here to tell you that the Minnesota Twins will play in the 2019 World Series, but who knows, anything is possible.

In today’s world everyone want everything right away, people have lost their patience and they put too much faith in what they see, hear and read on the internet. Fans give way too much credit to these so-called baseball experts. What bothers me is that as soon as your team is having a bad season and finds themselves out of the running for a playoff spot when the All-Star game rolls around that the calls go out to sell off your better players and rebuild. Fire sales and rebuilding are way too popular these days.

You can’t rebuild every couple of years and why does everyone want to keep trading good players that have produced in the past for someone who has not shown they can be at least the same caliber of a player as the one you just sent packing? It is easy to see the warts on the players that are on your team because you see them play every day. Don’t you think that the players you are trading for have warts too? Why do you think the other team is willing to trade them? To do your team a favor? I think not.

Fans have to accept the fact that sometimes players and teams have bad seasons, maybe it is the wrong manager, maybe it’s injuries, maybe it is chemistry, or maybe it is just plain bad luck. As they say now days, “shit happens”, you have to accept it. Think of it as your most recent golf game where you played a bad round, does that make you a bad player or cause you to throw your clubs away and give up the game? No, because the odds are that on the 17th or 18th hole you came through with a shot or putt that was worthy of the professionals.

The 2018 Twins have some good players and some players that do not belong in the major leagues, it is what it is. Youth is not always the answer, experience counts too, apparently too little in today’s world.

The Twins have holes, no doubt about it, but you can’t have an All-Star at every position either, you have to accept that. Now it is up to Derek Falvey and Thad Levine to step up and show us if they know baseball or are just graduates from a fancy university with no idea of what they are doing. We will see, the rest of this season and the coming off-season will be very telling.

  1. Well said.
Sometimes I feel like it is 2013 with Sano and Buxton, but one or both will probably step up and have a good career. With Rosario, Berrios and Romero, that would suggest something fun could be in our near future.
Baseball is a funny game. No good enough reason to stop pulling for your team.
