Twins Minor League History

Over-all Twins minor league stats 1961 – 2023

(No minor league baseball was played in 2020)

Since 1961-2023 the Minnesota Twins have had a total of 397 minor league teams and their over-all won/lost record stands at:

wins = 23,024
losses = 21,623
total games = 44,647
winning % = .516

If you rank the leagues categories in term of winning percentage you will end up with numbers that appear to show the higher the league, the lower the winning percentage for the most part. I am not sure what to make of this. For comparison’s sake, the Minnesota Twins big league record from 1961 – 2023 stands at 4,954 wins, 5,011 losses and 8 tie games for a .497 winning percentage excluding tie games.

Short A teams win % = .590
Rookie teams win % = .543
B, C, and D teams win % = .532
DSL teams win % = .531
High A teams win % = .531
Low A teams win % = .511
AA teams win % = .505
AAA teams win % = .496

Record by League Category

(No minor league baseball was played in 2020)

AAA – Twins have had 62 teams in 13 different cities from 1961 – 2023 and these teams have a record of 4,401 wins and 4,467 losses for a .496 winning percentage and 1 AAA championship  in 2002.

AA – Twins have had 61 teams in 7 different cities from 1961 – 2023 and these teams have a record of 4,331 wins and 4,251 losses for a .505 winning percentage and 7 AA championships with the last one coming in 2017.

High A – Twins have had 33 teams in 3 different cities from 1990 – 2023 and these teams have a record of 2,385 wins and 2,104 losses for a .531 winning percentage and three league championships which were won in 2014, 2018 and in 2023.

Low A – Twins have had 104 teams in 17 different cities from 1961 – 2023 and these teams have a record of 7,178 wins and 6,862 losses for a .511 winning percentage and eight league championships with the last one coming in 1987.

SHORT A – Twins have had 13 teams in 3 different cities from 1965 – 1973 and these teams had 541 wins and 376 losses for a .590 winning percentage and 7 league championships. The Northern League St. Cloud Rox have been the only Minnesota Twins minor league team based in Minnesota and they won 5 championships in the 7 years the team was located there.

B, C, and D – Twins had 9 teams in 5 different cities from 1961 – 1962 and these teams had a record of 541 wins and 476 losses for a .532 winning percentage and 1 league championship.

Rookie – Twins have had 90 teams in 4 different cities playing from 1963 – 2023 and these teams have 3,043 victories and 2,563 defeats for a nice .543 winning percentage and 13 league championships with the most recent occurring in Elizabethton in 2018.

Elizabethton had been a rookie league team for the Minnesota Twins since 1974 making it the longest running Twins minor league affiliate until it was eliminated by MLB prior to the 2021 season. Joe O’Brien Field which had seating for about 2,000 fans opened in 1974 and the E-Twins have called it home ever since. Former Twins (1981-1983) catcher Ray Smith has managed Elizabethton from 1987 – 1994 and again from 2002 – 2019 and has an amazing record of 1,048 wins and only 701 losses for a .599 winning percentage. During these 26 seasons Smith has led his team to the playoffs 15 times winning the championship 9 times and his teams have only had a losing season just three times (his first two seasons at the helm and again in 2019). WOW! Can we get Ray Smith to move to the Twin Cities?

DSL – The Twins have been a part of the Dominican Summer League from 1998 – 2023 with a total of 25 teams but won/lost records are only available from 2007 to 2023 and during that time frame the DSL Twins have recorded 574 wins against 507 losses for a .531 winning percentage with no league championships to date.

League Champions

(No minor league baseball was played in 2020)

Since the Minnesota Twins minor league teams started play in 1961 the Twins organization has won (or shared) a total of 39 league championships in 62 seasons. During these 62 seasons the Twins have had a total of 397 minor league teams so that equates to about 10% of their teams winning a league championship. During this time period, the Minnesota Twins themselves have won 3 American League championships (1965, 1987, and 1991) which comes out to 3.22%.

Year by Year

2023

The High-A Cedar Rapids Kernels finished the year with a total record of 86-52 and with division titles in both halves of the regular season, the West Division postseason championship and the league championship. The title breaks a 29-year championship drought and is the first for the Kernels as a Twins affiliate. The AAA St. Paul Saints finished with the best record (84-64) in the International League West Division but the way the playoffs are determined, the Saints missed out. The remaining four Twins minor league teams also all missed the playoffs finishing in fourth place or lower.

No MiLB in 2020

Director of Player Development – Alex Hassan
Scouting Director – Sean Johnson

On June 30, 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) has informed Minor League Baseball (MiLB) that it will not be providing its affiliated Minor League teams with players for the 2020 season due to COVID-19. As a result, there will not be a Minor League Baseball season in 2020.

“These are unprecedented times for our country and our organization as this is the first time in our history that we’ve had a summer without Minor League Baseball played,” said Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O’Conner. “While this is a sad day for many, this announcement removes the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 season and allows our teams to begin planning for an exciting 2021 season of affordable family entertainment.”

After the 2020 season ended, the Twins announced that Elizabethton (Rookie League) and Rochester (AAA) have been dropped as Minnesota Twins affiliates.

2019

Minnesota Twins minor league teams won 10 fewer games in 2019 than they did in 2018. Minnesota Twins minor league affiliates did not win any league championships but they did send teams to the playoff finals in AA (Pensacola) and Low A (Cedar Rapids) this season. Baseball America has the Twins rated 5th best in 2019 Organizational Standings, up from 11th in 2018. See link below.

  1. Attn Twins Trivia; Nice summation of the Total Wins/Losses/Tie of all Minnesota Twins minor league affiliates (1961-2019)! What I want to do is study the home field advantage in minor league baseball. The HFA has been studied for the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and even major men’s Div. 1 sports but not for minor league baseball. Unfortunately mainstream sites such as baseball-reference.com, statscrew.com, milb.com don’t give a team’s Home/Away splits for the regular season on a consistent basis. Milb.com only does for the current year and then takes it down after the current season is over! I have had sporadic success getting Home/Away splits for a particular team or even for a particular season for a particular league from the teams’ and leagues’ media guides (downloaded in pdf form).

    1. The problem with trying to get minor league information from electronic media guides is that the electronic pdf media guides only go so far back. The milb.com website only goes from 2005-2019.

You already totaled the Twins minor league affiliate total Wins/Losses/Ties for the regular season (1961-2019. Would you happen to have the Home/Away splits for the Twins’ minor league affiliates as far back as possible? How far back do your Home/Away splits for each Twins’ minor league affiliates go?

    2. Same question as #1 but for all other minor league teams other then just the Minnesota Twins affiliated teams. Or for as many teams, leagues as possible?

Do you have in your possession hard copy media guides for Twins and non-Twins minor league teams, especially (1961-2004)?? If I sent you an Excel spreadsheet with the year, league and team name already filled in could you send me back the Excel spreadsheet with the Home Team Win/Loss/Tie record for that season??

Thanks for any help with this! I enjoyed the Twins’ media guides you provided on your blog!

    1. Kevin, I have not looked in to home and away splits for the Twins minor league teams. If I get some time I will try to look into it for you. As far as Twins Media Guides are concerned, I have a hard copy of all Twins Media Guides from 1961-2019.

  2. Hello…my name is Brett Houser. I was drafted by the Twins in the 1974 June draft and was wondering who the scouts were in the Southern California region. I played at Millikan Hight School in Long Beach, Ca…’72 thru ’74.

    Thank You,

    Brett Houser

  3. That was an awesome recap of the Twins MiLB history. Thanks for sharing, I’m sure that took quite a bit of research, especially with the Twins changing teams so often at some of the levels. If only the Rookie league Championships were MLB World Series titles.
