2023 – Twins are 9-26 all-time in Postseason road games and enter today with an eight-game losing streak. They are seeking their first Postseason road win since a 2-0 victory on October 5, 2004 at old Yankee Stadium. The Twins came back from a 5-0 deficit with 4 runs in the seventh but it was not enough and they lost to the Houston Astros in Game 1 of the ALDS at Minute Maid Park by a score of 6-4. Bailey Ober (0-1) was the starter and loser, allowing three runs on four hits in 3 innings pitched, with no walks and two strikeouts. Twins pitchers combined to allow three home runs, including two from Yordan Alvarez. The offense recorded nine hits, including back-to-back home runs from Jorge Polanco (3-run) and Royce Lewis (solo) in the seventh inning. They became the third set of teammates
in Twins history (since 1961) to hit consecutive homers in the Postseason, joining Harmon Killebrew/Tony Oliva on October 4, 1970 vs. Baltimore (ALCS Game 2) and Michael Cuddyer/Justin Morneau on October 4, 2006 vs. Oakland (ALDS Game 2). Minnesota went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Attendance 43,024. Box Score

2019 – After losing games 1 & 2 in New York, the Twins return home to host their third playoff game at Target Field and first since October 7, 2010. These two teams began the 2010 ALDS at Target Field as the Yankees took both games, followed by a sweep in Yankee Stadium. Twins are looking to snap a 10-game home postseason losing streak and win in the Twin Cities for the first time since winning Game 1 of the 2002 ALCS over Anaheim by a score of 2-1 ( Joe Mays over Kevin Appier). During the regular season, the Twins went 46-35 at Target Field, the 13th best record in baseball, compared to 55-26 on the road, the best in baseball.

The Yankees started Luis Severino and the Twins went with Jake Odorizzi but both starters were gone before the sixth inning started. The visiting Yankees scored first and never looked back and had a 3-0 lead after seven innings before the Twins were able to push across their first and as it turned out only run in the eighth inning on a Eddie Rosario home run to lead off the inning. Rosario also had a double and a single to go with his homer. Luis Arraez chipped in two hits. When the smoke cleared in the Twins 5-1 loss the 41,121 baseball fans at Target Field realized they had seen their final Twins game of the 2019 season. It was an exciting season but the finish was certainly not what they had hoped for nor was it the finish I had expected. I truly believed this was the year that the Twins would finally put those hated New York Yankees in the rear-view mirror but it did not happen. Odorizzi took the loss. The Minnesota Twins have now lost 16 consecutive postseason games in the last 15 Octobers. Box Score

2018 – A Spanish-language police report out of the Dominican Republic indicates the Twins third baseman Miguel Sano was arrested after an incident in which an officer requested he pull over outside of a club at 3 a.m. Sunday. Sanó, the report says, was driving a vehicle without license plates and did not have proper identification when he was stopped in his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, then proceeded to run over the officer as he tried to leave the scene. The officer, the report says, suffered a fractured leg in the incident.

Update the next day – Miguel Sano won’t be charged for traffic incident in Dominican Republic; officer says collision that sent him to hospital was accidental.

2015 – Rod Carew, who went into heart failure three weeks after having the attack and three stents and temporary balloon pump installed, lives with – and thanks to – a machine called a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), which doctors needed a six-hour surgery to put in at the Scripps Prebys Cardiovascular Institute on Oct. 7. Carew will go on to have a heart (and kidney) transplant on December 16, 2016.

2009 – The Twins played the New York Yankees in the first ever post season game at the new Yankee Stadium III in game 1 of the 2009 ALDS and lost to the Bronx bombers by a score of 7-2. The Twins scored first with two in the top of the third on four hits and a passed ball but the NYY came back to score the next seven runs. Brian Duensing took the loss for the Twins and C.C. Sabathia got the win for the Yanks. Box Score

2001 – The season should have ended on September 30th in Cleveland but due to the 9/11 attacks and the season being extended by a week to make up the missing games, the Twins season finale was played today at the Metrodome against the visiting Chicago White Sox with 14,413 fans in the stands. Kip Wells started for Chicago and Brad Radke went for Minnesota. The White Sox scored in the first inning when Jose Valentin went deep off Radke but the White Sox didn’t score again until the ninth while the Twins scored 8 times and held on for a 8-5 win. Radke (15-11) went 8.1 innings (92 pitches) allowing 3 runs on just 4 hits and was the winner but needed a little help in the ninth from Eddie Guardado for the final out after Jack Cressand couldn’t do the job. No long balls for the Twins but they hit 5 doubles and stole 4 bases. Corey Koskie was 2 for 2 with 3 walks, 3 runs scored, 2 SB and 3 RBI. Matt LeCroy had 2 hits, both doubles and 2 RBI. The Twins finished the season with an 85-77 record, their best season since 1992. The Twins were in first place for 111 days but a mid-season collapse took them out of the running. The Twins finished in second place in the AL Central, six games behind the first place Cleveland Indians. This turned out to be Tom Kelly’s final game as the Twins manager. He managed the Twins for 16 seasons and finished with a 1,140-1,244 (.478%) record with two World Series wins on his resume. Box Score

1987 – Pinch-Hitter Don Baylor singled to break an eighth-inning tie, and Gary Gaetti homered in his first two playoff at-bats as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 in the opening game of the ALCS at the H.H. Metrodome. Gaetti becomes the first player in MLB history to hit two home runs in his first two at-bats of post-season play. Tom Brunansky plates three with two doubles in four trips to the plate. Frankie Viola goes the first seven innings but Jeff Reardon gets the win when he finishes up with two innings. The Twins debut the “Homer Hanky“. The Homer Hanky was manufactured in China and sold for $1 and quickly became a much sought after piece of sports memorabilia. The Homer Hanky became so popular that the Star Tribune sold out its initial supply of 430,000 and ordered another 600,000. Box Score

1965 – The Twins win game 2 of the World Series when Jim Kaat beats Sandy Koufax 5-1 in front of 48,700 delirious fans at the Met. Bob Allison makes a fantastic catch sliding across the LF line in the fifth inning and to this day this is one of the finest fielding plays ever seen in a World Series. Jim Kaat not only pitches a complete game for the win but also goes 1 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI. Box Score
