2023BATS FINISH COLD IN HOTLANTA as the Twins get shut out by the Braves at Truist Park, losing by a score of 3-0. It marked the club’s second time being swept this season (also June 6-8 at TB). It was the sixth time the Twins have been shut out this season, five of which now have come on the road. Kenta Maeda (1-5) was the starter and loser, allowing two runs on five hits in 5 innings pitched, with two walks and four strikeouts. The struggling offense recorded just four hits, two came off the bat of Willi Castro. Minnesota also struck out 14 times and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, making them 0-for-23 with RISP over the three-game series. The loss dropped the Twins two games under .500 at 40-42 and dropped them into second place. Rocco Baldelli voiced his displeasure with the offense and said they were flat and made no adjustments what so ever. Baldelli took the rare step of closing the clubhouse to the press for a players-only meeting. Rocco Baldelli unloaded on his team in one room with the hope they were hashing out the same issues in the other. With the clubhouse closed for a lengthy players-only meeting, the Twins manager unleashed a series of harsh criticisms about his team’s dismal offense following a 3-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Braves fans must have enjoyed the series as 121,779 showed up to watch the Braves kick the Twins butts on a Monday thru Wednesday series. The Twins are now off to Baltimore where they will have tomorrow off before taking on the Orioles in a three-game series.  Box Score

2022 – The Twins are playing their second doubleheader today, it marks the second of three scheduled doubleheaders for the Twins this season. They split their first DH with the Tigers on May 31 and will play the Guardians in another DH in September. Turns out the Twins split this DH too. In game one Devin Smeltzer was the Twins starter and he went six innings and had a career high nine strikeouts over six innings. Smeltzer allowed just one run on four hits but got a ND for his effort. Emilio Pagan (1-3) blew his fifth save and took the loss. Carlos Correa hit his ninth home run. The Guardians were out-hit 6 to 5 and committed 2 errors to just 1 for Minnesota but still came away the winners. Box Score game one

2021No game today – Tonight’s series opener between the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins in Chicago has been postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader on Monday, July 19, with Game 1 starting at 4:10 p.m. CT, followed by the nightcap approximately 30-45 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.

The Twins announced that Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins and one of the premier sporting and entertainment venues in the Upper Midwest, will play host to the 2022 NHL Winter Classic® featuring the Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues on January 1, 2022, the National Hockey League (NHL®) announced today. Ticket and broadcast information for the event will be released at a later date.

Originally scheduled for January 1, 2021, the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today’s announcement was made by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman from Tampa prior to Game 1 of the 2021 Stanley Cup® Final between the Montreal Canadians and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

2020 – The Twins would have been playing the Colorado Rockies at Target Field today but then you remember that nothing has changed, all the games this season have been postponed/cancelled due to COVID-19. 85 games missed so far.

2019 – The Twins stop in at Guaranteed Rate Field to take on the third place Chicago White Sox. In a game that lasts less than 3 hours (2 hours and 56 minutes) both teams score runs in pairs. Unfortunately for Minnesota they do it in the second and ninth innings while the home team does it in the first, fifth and eighth and when the final score is on the board it shows the White Sox with 6 and the Twins with 4. Two Twins errors by Ehire Adrianza prove costly as starter Jose Berrios (8-4) goes 7.1 innings allowing 9 hits and 6 runs (3 earned) and is saddled with the loss. The hitting star today was Miguel Sano with a 2 for 4 day with 2 home runs, two runs and 4 RBI. Adrianza and Max Kepler also had two hits each. LaMonte Wade Jr made his major league debut and was welcomed to the big leagues by being hit by a pitch in his first AB. He then got the steal sign but was thrown out at second base. Box Score

2018 –  The Twins took the final game of the series as they beat the White Sox by a score of 2-1 in 13 innings in a game that took four hours and 51 minutes. Jake Odorizzi was the Twins starter but did not factor into the decision, pitching 6.0 scoreless innings with three hits allowed and eight strikeouts. Fernando Rodney blew the save snapping a string of 15 straight successful save opportunities. Logan Morrison went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a double scoring both of the Twins runs. The Twins scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the 13th inning when Max Kepler who had entered the game in the 7th inning worked former Twins pitcher Hector Santiago for a bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 count with two out. Now the Twins move across town to take on the Chicago Cubs. Box Score

Howard Fox

Former Twins executive Howard Fox passed away in Orlando, Florida at the age of 90. Fox had worked in a variety of roles with the Washington Senators and Minnesota Twins for over 50 years and worked his way up to club President in 1984 and until recently was part of the Twins Executive Board. For all his hard work with the Twins, fans may best remember Fox for a fight he had and lost in 1966 to then Twins coach Billy Martin. Many fans will still tell you today that Marin was fired after he took the 1969 Twins to the playoffs (they lost) because Fox talked Twins owner Calvin Griffith into firing Martin.

2007 – Frank Thomas hits a three-run homer off Twins hurler Carlos Silva in the first inning of the Blue Jay’s 8-5 loss at the Metrodome to become the 21st major leaguer to hit 500 home runs. The ‘Big Hurt’, who has hit 50 homers (10% ) against the Twins, also hit his first home run of his career in Minnesota in 1990 as a Chicago White Sox. Thomas is 2 for 4 in this game with a double to go along with his home run and 4 RBI. Box Score

2005 – Jesse Crain pitches 1 2/3 innings of relief against the Royals and turns out to be the winning pitcher in a 11-8 victory in the Metrodome. Crain improves his record to 7-0 this season and sets an AL record for relievers by going 10-0 to start a career. In the same game, Australian Twins third baseman Glenn Williams runs his hitting streak to 13 games getting a hit in every single game of his short career after spending 12 years in the minors. Unfortunately, he separates his shoulder and goes on the Disabled List. Williams never plays in another major league baseball game. Box Score

2004 – No game today, scheduled day off.

1981 – MLB on strike.

1978No game today, scheduled day off.

1961 – It was a hot day in Minneapolis as the temperature peaked at 95 degrees but it was only 92 degrees in Bloomington when Camilo Pascual threw the first pitch in a night game against the Boston Red Sox. The Twins out hit the Red Sox 5 to 4 at Met Stadium but lose 6-2. Twins starter and loser Camilo Pascual walked 5 batters in 6.1 innings and stories circulated that Pascual was tipping his pitches. That being said, it didn’t help that the Twins committed two errors behind him costing two unearned runs and the loss dropped his record to 5-10. Meanwhile Red Sox starter Ike Delock walked one and pitched a complete game for his fifth win of the season. Bob Allison was 2 for 4 with a double and a home run for Mele’s team. Box Score
