The Twins starter was Bailey Ober but he took a ND for the days work allowing three runs on five hits in 3 innings pitched, with one walk and five strikeouts. Trevor Megill earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings (career-high) of relief and was one of seven relievers used, which matched a season-high for Minnesota. The offense recorded a season-todate-high 15 hits, their most since recording 16 hits on September 21, 2021 at Chicago-NL. Six players had multiple hits as Gary Sánchez and Gio Urshela each recorded three. 2021No game today, Twins have a scheduled day off. Just to keep things interesting. Twins third baseman Josh Donaldson pledges to release ‘entire catalog’ of pitchers cheating https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2178062 via @theScore

2020 – The Twins probably would have put on another beating on those damn Yankees today IF all the games this season had not been postponed/canceled due to COVID-19. We have now missed 56 games.

2019 – The Twins welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to Target Field with four quick runs in the second inning off Gio Gonzalez on six hits but the big knock was a 3-run home run by Byron Buxton (5). Michael Pineda started for Minnesota and went 6 innings, struck out 6 Brewers and gave up 3 runs on just 3 hits. Taylor Rogers allowed an Orlando Arcia two-run homer in the eighth inning, just the third blown save for the Twins this season – tied for second fewest in baseball and the Brewers held on for a 5-4 victory in front of a nice crowd of 29,167. The Twins had 10 hits but only Max Kepler had two. Max Kepler has been named American League Player of the Week, the second honor for the Twins this season (also Jake Odorizzi on May 6), this marks Kepler’s second career AL Player of the Week honor, previously winning with Joe Mauer on August 7, 2016. During the week Kepler posted a slash line of .571/.600/1.190 with 10 runs scored, 12 hits, four doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI, three walks and a stolen base across five games played. This month, Twins starters have gone 17-5, 2.87 ERA (157.0 IP, 50 ER) with 39 walks, 153 strikeouts, an opponent batting average of .231 and an opponent OPS of .663. They also have 15 quality starts among the 26 games started this month. Box Score

2018 –  The Twins lost to the Mariners by a score of 3-1, suffering their third sweep of the season. The loss dropped the Twins record to 21-27. José Berríos was the starter and loser, allowing two runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings pitched with eight strikeouts. The Twins slumping offense recorded just four hits, marking the fourth time in their last five games with five hits-or-fewer. Eddie Rosario had two of the Twins four hits, both singles. Box Score

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired minor league catcher Janigson Villalobos from the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitcher Phil Hughes, cash considerations and their 2018 Competitive Balance B draft selection (74th overall draft pick). Hughes is making $13.2 million this season and is owed $13.2 million next season, as well. Now Minnesota will eat the remainder of Hughes’ salary this year, but San Diego will pay nearly half the tab next season.

2011 – Twins shortstop Alexi Casilla had a nice day at the plate against the team that originally signed him when he went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a triple, scores twice, walks once an knocks in one and steals a base to boot. Twins starter Scott Baker threw seven scoreless innings and left with a 5-0 lead at Target Field, but the Los Angeles Angels scored five in the eighth and one in the ninth against the bullpen and defeated the Twins, 6-5.  Alex Burnett, Dusty Hughes and Jim Hoey had a bad day in relief of Baker. Baker became the first major-league starter in 13 years to fashion a scoreless outing of at least seven innings and leave with a lead of at least five runs, only to see his team lose. As badly as things have gone for the Twins this season, who are now 16-33 and 14.5 games out of first, the loss set a new low. It was the only the second time since the team came to Minnesota in 1961 – and the first time in nearly 40 years – that the Twins have lost a game in which they led by five-or-more runs going into the eighth inning. Since their only previous such loss – 11-9 to the Yankees on July 30, 1971 – the Twins had gone 755-0 in games in which they took a lead of five-or-more runs into the eighth inning! That was the longest winning streak in major league history in games of that type. Box Score

2010 – Jason Kubel hitting in the seven spot in the order became the first Twins player with a two-homer game at Target Field in the Twins 8-2 win over the Yankees. Kubel hit a solo homer in the sixth, a three-run shot in the seventh and had an RBI double for the Twins, who had gone eight games and 349 plate appearances without a home run before the lefty broke the skid. Kubel knocked in five on the day and scored three times. Nick Blackburn went seven for the win and upped his record to 6-1 for the year. Box Score

2009 – With a crowd of 28,221 fans in the stands at the Metrodome the Twins score three runs in the bottom of the third inning and hold on for a 4-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox matched a modern day MLB record with six wild pitches including four by starter and loser Daisuke Matsuzaka. The last time it was done was also at the Metrodome back on April 13, 1991 when the California Angels did it in a 15-9 win over the Twins. Twins starter Kevin Tapani lasted just six innings but upped his record to 7-1. Jose Mijares, Matt Guerrier and Joe Nathan kept the Red Sox off the board the rest of the way. Twins lead-off batter Denard Span was 4  for 4. Box Score

2006 – The Twins beat the Mariners at the Dome 9-5 as Twins starter Boof Bonser earned his first big league win and the Twins turned their 11th triple-play since moving to Minnesota in 1961. Oddly enough the Mariners scored a run on that triple-play. With the Twins ahead 8-4, Twins skipper Gardenhire brought in reliever Jesse Crain to start the 8th inning. Crain quickly gave up a double to Richie Sexson, walked Carl Everett and then gave up a single to Adrian Beltre to load the bases. Gardy had seen enough and brought in Juan Rincon. On Rincon’s first pitch Mariner catcher Kenji Johjima grounded slowly to second baseman Luis Castillo who scooped up the ball, chased down Beltre and tagged him and then threw to first baseman Justin Morneau for the second out. Morneau then saw Everett take too wide a turn at third base and fired the ball to third baseman Tony Batista who applied the tag for the third out. Six Mariners batters had two hits in the game but the Twins Luis Castillo and Juan Castro kept the Twins in the game with three hits each. Juan Rincon recorded his only save of the season. Box Score

1993No game today. Twins game at Oakland was rained out and will be played as part of a double header on August 14.

1983 – Twins reliever Rick Lysander becomes the first Twins pitcher to lose both games of a double-header as the Tigers beat the Twins 7-4 in the first game and 2-1 in the second game that goes 12 innings at Tiger Stadium. Outfielder Bobby Mitchell had 3 hits in 5 at bats and scored once for the Twins but it was all for naught when Tigers DH Larry Herndon hit a walk-off single and scored Johnny Grub with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Rick Renick accounted for the Twins lone run with his first home run of the season in the fifth inning. Twins starter and loser Tommy Hall went just 3.2 innings. 1964 – In the first game of a doubleheader at Dodger Stadium against the Los Angeles Angels, Twins center fielder Jimmie Hall is beaned by Angel lefty Bo Belinsky as Hall leads off the top of the fifth inning. The Twins end up losing the game 4-1 as Belinsky struck out 8 Twins on his way to a complete game win. Hall ends up with a concussion and tries to come back on May 31st as a pinch-hitter but ends up striking out. Hall sits out several more games and gets back in the line-up on June 4th. Hall hit 33 home runs as a rookie in 1963 but is never really the same player after this beaning. The Star Tribune write-up about the incident is dated May 26th, obviously incorrect.
