The opener of a three-game series between the Yankees and Twins was suspended with the scored tied 0-0 after five innings. The game was halted at 8:32 p.m. CT on Tuesday, as a thunderstorm wreaked havoc at Target Field. Following a rain delay of one hour and 23 minutes, which was the first outdoor delay in Minnesota since Sept. 26, 1981, the contest was officially suspended for the night and resumed at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday May 26th ahead of the day’s regularly scheduled 6:10 p.m. contest. In just the second at-bat once the contest was under way again, Derek Jeter belted a 1-1 change-up from Twins left-hander Brian Duensing into the bullpen in left-center field and that solo home run was all the Yankees would need to hand the Twins a 1-0 loss in the series opener at Target Field.
It was the first home run that Duensing had allowed all season. By the way, the Twins also lost the regularly scheduled game 3-2 on the 26th. Box Score

In the second game the Twins scored twice in the top of the first, Boston came back with four in the bottom of the second but the Twins scored six times in the third on four hits, two errors and a HBP and that was pretty much the ballgame as Twins starter Paul Thormodsgard held the Red Sox off the board after that for 8 innings and got the win. Outfielder Lyman Bostock has 12 put outs in the 2nd game of a doubleheader, tying the ML mark. His 17 put outs for the twin bill also sets a major league record.
1969 – Playing before a huge Yankee crowd of 57,445 at Yankee Stadium the Minnesota Twins survived a barrage of fruits, vegetables, paper gliders and baseballs from the Ball Day crowd to take both ends of a double-header and three out of four in the series and move into first place in the AL west by 1.5 games ahead of the Oakland A’s. This was the Twins first DH of the season. The Twins continue their 13 game road trip with their next stop being Washington.
In Game one it took Twins starter Dave Boswell just two hours and four minutes and 129 pitches to beat the Yankees 2-1 in a complete game to even his record at 5-5. Boswell struck out four batters and walked 8 Yankees and blamed it on a huge hole on the pitching mound. Boswell was helped by Billy Martin who apparently stole the Yankees signs and called for pitch-outs that allowed George Mitterwald to throw out two Yankee baserunners. In addition to his fine play behind the plate Mitterwald had two hits. The Twins scored both of their runs in the sixth inning on a double by Boswell, a single by Tovar that scored Boswell, a single by Cardenas and Killebrew hit a sac fly to score Tovar with in what turned out to be the winning run. Fritz Peterson held the Twins to two runs over seven innings but took he loss. Box Score
Game two saw Dick Woodson almost match Boswell with a complete game but when the rookie Woodson took a 3-0 lead into the ninth and gave up a leadoff walk, Billy Martin called for Ron Perranoski who made it a chore but finally nailed down the save. It was Perranoski’s 22 appearance in 39 games this season. Woodson also got his first big league hit in the game. 1961 – Twins starter Pedro Ramos gives up five straight hits including two home runs and a total of five runs without retiring a single batter but manages to retire the next three batters and ends up going 9 innings but ends up with a ND. Ramos gave up 5 hits in the first inning but held the Tigers to just two hits over the next 8 frames. Meanwhile; the Twins offense keeps pecking away and finally ties the game at 5-5 with a Reno Bertoia single that scores Dan Dobbek who had a pinch-hit double in the home half of the ninth. The Tigers went ahead 6-5 in the 10th inning on a Bill Bruton home run off reliever Ted Sadowski but the Twins fought back in the bottom of the 10th and scored a run to tie the game when Bob Allison singled, Earl Battey sacrificed him to second and Hal Naragon delivered a pinch-hit single. Paul Giel keeps the Tigers off the board in the 11th inning and the Twins bats got to work once again. Lenny Green who extended his hitting streak to 22 games doubles for his fourth hit of the game, Bertoia’s sac bunt moves Green to third base bringing up the Killer, but he gets a free pass putting runners at the corners and the slumping Jim Lemon steps up and slams the first pitch he sees to left field for a game winning walk-off single. The 7-6 walk-off win in front of 10,987 Ladies Day fans brings the Twins back to the .500 mark and finally ends the five-game losing streak. The win by Paul Giel was his first and only win he would get for the Minnesota Twins. The Twins wrapped up a long home stand that saw them play 22 out of their last 24 games at Met Stadium while posting 10-14 mark. Now they have to hit he road for 18 games in six cities and if you follow along here, you will see it won’t be pretty. First stop, Washington D.C., the city that used to be their home from 1901-1960.
