2024 – After completing their three-game series/home-stand with the New York Yankees by getting swept in three games, the Twins began their six-game road-trip with a loss to the Cleveland Guardians by a score of 3-2 at Progressive Field. Simeon Woods Richardson was the starter but did not factor into the decision, allowing one run on four hits in 5.1 innings pitched, with no walks and two strikeouts. The game was special to Woods Richardson because he faced off against Guardians starter Triston McKenzie who is also black. There are only nine black starting pitchers in the major leagues including one on the IL. Jhoan Duran (0-1) was dealt the loss, allowing a solo home run to José Ramírez, which broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Twins offense recorded just four hits and walked five times. Alex Kirilloff homered for the third time this season. Max Kepler doubled, giving him 10 for the season and 194 in his career, passing César Tovar and moving into sole possession of 13th on the Twins all-time list. Box Score

The offense recorded 11 hits, four coming from Rob Refsnyder, who set a career-high. Josh Donaldson hit his fifth home run of the season and drove in two of the club’s four runs. 2018No Game Today

2011 – The face of the Minnesota Twins, the man who every baseball fan in Minnesota knew, the greatest slugger in Twins history, Hall of Famer, Harmon Clayton Killebrew passed away today in Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 74 after suffering from esophageal cancer. The Twins, who were in Seattle wore a number “3” on their right sleeve and will continue to do so for the rest of the season. The Twins players also announced that they will wear their 1961 throw back jerseys for all their remaining home games. The Twins grounds crew painted a large white number “3” behind second base and dug up home plate and placed a picture of Harmon Killebrew batting under home plate and then replaced home plate at Target Field. A sad day for sure. By the way, the Twins beat the Mariners 2-1 with Killebrew’s number “3” jersey hanging in the dugout.

Each team ironically only had 3 hits in the game but the Twins used two walks and a Michael Cuddyer single in the first inning to get all the runs they would need. Francisco Liriano out-dueled “King” Felix Hernandez with seven sharp innings allowing just the one run and striking out nine. Glen Perkins and Matt Capps kept the Mariners off the board in the last two innings. Box Score

Brian Buchanan and Bobby Kielty each had four hits in seven at bats for Minnesota but they lost anyway. Box Score

McLain’s complete game win was his eight straight victory over Minnesota and has not lost to the Twins since September 1967.
