2011 – Talk about unusual. The Twins were playing the Detroit Tigers at Target Field and the temperature at game time (7:10 PM) was an unseasonably warm 87 degrees. Francisco Liriano was pitching in his first game since he had thrown a no-hitter just one week earlier but Liriano lasted just 3 innings and the Twins were down 4-0 when Liriano left the game due to illness. The area was under a tornado warning due to heavy thunderstorms in the vicinity when the game was delayed in the bottom of the fourth inning due to rain and then the hail started and lasted for about 5 minutes, some of the hail was golf ball sized and littered the outfield grass. The game was delayed for 64 minutes while the grounds crew pondered what to do next. They had a tractor pulling a jet blower to try to round up the hail but finally settled on rakes and buckets to get the larger ice chunks off the field. Later in the game Twins rookie Rene Tosoni hit his first major league home run but it was to little too late and the Twins ended up losing 10-2. Players from both teams were seen playfully tossing the hail at each other and some were even trying to hit the hail with their bats. Yes, it was a strange night in a strange season. Box Score
