2023 – A Twins rally comes up just short again and the Twins lose to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium, losing the three-game series, their first series defeat vs. KC this season. Bailey Ober (6-5) was the starter and loser, allowing a career-high six runs on a career-high 11 hits in 4 innings pitched. Ober’s streak of 21 starts in which he had pitched into the fifth inning ended tonight. The offense recorded 12 hits, including three from Byron Buxton, who doubled three times and drove in two runs but it was not enough. Max Kepler who has been hot since the All-Star break reached base three times with two hits and a walk, including his 15th home run of the season. The Royals Bobby Witt has been a one-man gang with his second straight four-hit night along with another home run and 3 more RBI. Box Score

2022 – The Twins lost to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park by a score of 10-1. Joe Ryan (7-4) was the starter and loser, allowing a career-high 10 runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings pitched, with two walks, seven strikeouts and five home runs allowed. The five homers allowed tied a club record, previously done by Bert Blyleven (September 13, 1986 vs. Texas) and Carlos Silva (August 22, 2006 at Baltimore). The offense recorded just five hits, two from Luis Arraez while Byron Buxton hit his team-leading 25th home run, his third homer in his last four road games. The Twins are now 25-25 on the road. 2021No Twins game today, scheduled day off.

2020 – For the third game in a row a Twins starter acquired either through trade or free agency from a NL team pays dividends. In this case it is 40-year old 6’5″ lefty Rich Hill who keeps the visiting Cardinals scoreless for five innings on just 2 hits and a walk while striking out 2. Hill left with a 3-0 lead and the Twins bullpen made it stand up in the 3-0 victory giving the Twins a two game series sweep. The Twins only had five hits themselves but one of those was a Eddie Rosario home run. Nelson Cruz and Alex Avila had the other RBI. Before the Cardinals can leave town it is determined that several Cardinal players and staff tested positive for COVID-19. Rumors circulate that a number of Cardinals enjoyed a visit to one of our local Casino’s during their stay in MN. It turns out the Cardinals won’t play another game until August 15th. Box Score

2019 – No Game Today

2018Jose Berrios didn’t have it at Fenway Park today and fill-in manager Derek Shelton had no magic potion as the Twins were shutout 3-0 by the Boston Red Sox primarily due to Nathan Eovaldi’s seven sharp innings allowing only four Twins hits. Adalberto Mejia pitched three good innings of relief keeping the Red Sox off the board and allowing just one hit. The Red Sox record now stands at 74-33. The Twins played ball the last few days like they wish the season was over and in essence it is. The Twins return home now to try their luck against the league leading Cleveland Indians. Box Score

Today former Twins Jim Thome and Jack Morris were inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Morris, the St. Paul native, played one season for the Twins in 1991, going 18-12, 3.43 ERA (246.2 IP, 94 ER), including a World Series record that Fall of 2-0, 1.17 ERA (23.0 IP, 3 ER) in three starts against Atlanta earning World Series MVP honors. Morris pitched a Game 7 complete game 10-inning shutout with seven hits allowed, two walks and eight strikeouts opposite Hall of Famer John Smoltz. Thome, who played
parts of two seasons with the Twins from 2010-11, hit 37 home runs in 179 games in a Twins uniform, including his 600th and 601st homers at Comerica Park on August 15, 2011, off Rick Porcello and Daniel Schlereth.

2005 – The Twins were playing the Boston Red Sox on the road and hit two home runs but three errors led to three unearned runs and eventually to an 8-5 loss to the first place beantowners. Twins starter Carlos Silva deserved better. While leaping to catch a long drive hit by former Twin David Ortiz, Twins gold-glove center fielder Torii Hunter catches his spikes in the padded fence in Boston’s Fenway Park and suffers a broken ankle and torn ligaments that sideline the Twins star for the rest of the season. As one Red Sox player said, “Who would have thought that Spiderman could get hurt?”. Box Score

2004 – No game today, scheduled day off.

1981 – MLB on strike.

1967 – At Fenway Park, the Twins score first but the Red Sox score last with four in the eighth and beat Minnesota’s Twins 6-3 as Al Worthington blows the save and gets the loss. Tony Oliva was 2 for 4 with a home run and Ted Uhlaender was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple but it was not enough. Box Score

A five hit, five run fifth inning with home runs by Bob Allison and Ted Uhlaender propel the Twins to an easy 10 to 3 win over the Red Sox in game 2 of the DH. Allison ended up with two home runs and Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva hit long balls too giving the Twins five for the game. Rich Rollins didn’t hit any home runs but had himself a nice 4 for 5 game. Twins starter Jim Perry took advantage of the runs given him and pitched a complete game for the win. Red Sox first baseman George “Boomer” Scott thrills the crowd with an inside-the-park homer but that was one of the few times Red Sox fans had reason to cheer in this game. Box Score

1965No game today, scheduled day off.

1961 – The Twins were out-hit for the second day in a row by the high-flying Detroit Tigers in Detroit but thanks to a three-run home run by Harmon Killebrew in the eighth inning with two on and two out to greet reliever Manny Montejo who had just replaced Jim Bunning,  a 3-2 Tigers lead was quickly turned into a 5-3 Twins lead.  The Tigers made it 5-4 in the bottom of the inning off Twins reliever Ray Moore. In the ninth Moore retired the first two Tigers but then a single and an error put runners at first and second. Sam Mele brought in Bill Pleis who proceeded to strike out Bill Bruton and the Twins (44-56) were winners again. Twins starter Jim Kaat got his fourth win against 11 losses when he went 7 strong innings allowing three runs, two earned on five hits. Box Score
