2018 – It is a real pitchers duel at Fenway Park as the Twins and Red Sox open a four-game series. It didn’t start out that way as the Twins got 3 singles, a wild pitch and a walk but failed to score in the first inning when Joe Mauer was thrown out at home plate on the Twins third single of the inning (by Eduardo Escobar). The Sox scored their lone run in the second inning on a double-play ball hit by Mookie Betts. The Twins failed to score again in the sixth inning when Eddie Rosario was also thrown out at the plate. The Twins finally pushed their first run across in the seventh, on a double-play ball by Ehire Adrianza. 2010 – The Twins pummel the KC Royals 19-1 at Kauffman Stadium with some serious hitting. Twins hitters pounded out 20 hits including 11 extra base hits. The 11 extra base hits was just one shy of the team record dating back to May 8, 1979 against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Met. Joe Mauer was 5 for 5 with a home run and 7 RBI’s, Danny Valencia was 4 for 4 with a grand slam home run, 4 runs scored and 4 RBI’s, Delmon Young added 4 hits, and Francisco Liriano got the win with 7 innings of 3 hit pitching. One of those extra-base hits came from Twins rookie Danny Valencia in the first inning when he knocked his first career home run — a grand slam over the fence in right field — with two outs. With the grand slam, Valencia became the first Twin to ever record a grand slam as his first career home run. The unfortunate Royals starter and loser was Zach Greinke, last years Cy Young award winner. Mauer’s performance was only the third time in major-league history that a catcher recorded at least five hits and seven RBIs in the same game. The other back-stops to do so were Walker Cooper for the Reds on July 6, 1949 against the Cubs (6 hits, 10 RBIs) and Victor Martinez for the Indians in Seattle on July 16, 2004 (5 hits, 7 RBIs).
