1969 – On this day in 1969, center fielder Curt Flood of the St. Louis Cardinals writes a letter to Bowie Kuhn, the commissioner of major league baseball, protesting the Cardinals’ decision to trade him to the Philadelphia Phillies and asking to be made a free agent. All MLB players should be forever grateful to this man for his courage. Flood should rank right up there with Jackie Robinson.
