2010 – Engineers at the Metrodome used a shotgun this afternoon to rupture a roof panel that was under stress from accumulated ice. By using a precision shot, the engineers were able to cause the panel to fail in an area away from the clamps that hold the tarp to the roof’s frame, that makes repairs easier. The panel becomes to fifth (out of 106) to break following the 17-inch snowstorm that hit the Twin Cities the weekend of December 11th.

1981

1979 – With the official groundbreaking taking place, construction began on the Metrodome and it was built by the state of Minnesota at a cost of approximately $68 million. The Metrodome becomes baseballs’ third domed facility.

June 12, 1980: The domed Hubert H. Humphrey Stadium in downtown Minneapolis is beginning to take shape as construction continues on schedule. The 65,000-seat facility, scheduled to open in April of 1982 is about $11.7 million below budget. (Pioneer Press file photo)
