2021No Twins game today, scheduled day off.

2020 – The Twins went with an “Opener” strategy as Tyler Clippard started the game and was followed by five relievers. Devin Smeltzer (1-0) followed Clippard and gave up the only run that Cleveland would get as he went 2.2 innings giving up two hits and one walk but it was good enough to get his his first win of the season as the Twins beat Cleveland 3-1 and put three in the W column in the four game series. The Twins tied a team record holding the opponent to just two hits for two consecutive games. They had previously done this in 1992, 1986 and in 1970. Mitch Garver hit his first home run of the season and Max Kepler had two doubles and scored twice. Free Agent pitcher Homer Bailey whom the Twins signed this off season and was expected to fill one of the starting roles and started one game (July 28) was put on the IL with right bicep tendinitis and missed the next 52 games. Bailey made one more appearance in a Twins uniform on September 22 before the Twins released him a few days later. Next up, the Pittsburgh Pirates come to town. Box Score

2019 – The Kansas City Royals come to town and put up a bigger struggle than what home-town fans may have expected but in the end the Twins win 11-9 even though the Royals out-hit them and the Twins committed two errors. Martín Pérez (8-4) was the starter but did not factor into the decision, allowing five runs on seven hits in 5 innings. Trevor May (5-3) threw one pitch and earned the win while Sergio Romo earned his first Twins save with 1.1 scoreless innings. Sam Dyson’s second outing as a Twins was no better then his first. A few days later he went on the IL after admitting he was hurt before the trade but had not told anyone. The hot Nelson Cruz went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, a walk and five RBI. Twins also went 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left just five men on base. Box Score

1982 – The Twins were playing the California Angels in Anaheim Stadium but after 6 innings the Twins had only 2 hits and trailed by a score of 6-0 against Angels hurler Mike Witt. But when the smoke had cleared, the Twins scored 3 in the 7th, 3 more in the 8th and completed their come back with still 3 more in the 9th and Minnesota’s young Twins had an amazing 9-7 victory and Jeff Little notched one of his only three major league wins. Gary Ward was 2 for 4 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI and Ron Washington was 2 for 5 with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Ron Davis notched his 13th save of the season. Box Score

1979 – No game today, scheduled day off.

1967 – The Twins were down 4-0 at D.C. Stadium to the Washington Senators when they tied it up at 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning. 1965 – The starters for this Twins vs Orioles game at the Met were Steve Barber for the O’s and Jim Merritt for Minnesota. The game was tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Twins got to reliever Dick Hall and he gave up 3 runs before being relieved by future HOF Jim Palmer who then retired the side but the Twins were up 5-2 going into the final inning. Merritt unfortunately gave up two singles and a three-run home run to Dick Brown and with two out in the top of the ninth John Klippstein relieved Merritt. Klippstein needed just four pitches to strike out batter Jim Palmer. The first batter to face the 19-year-old Palmer in the bottom of the ninth was pinch-hitter Jimmie Hall who was out of the Twins line-up with a sore knee but on a 1-2 count Hall deposited Palmer’s next pitch into the left-field pavilion and the Twins were 6-5 walk-off winners. Now check out these Oriole pitchers in this game. Barber left the game after three inning when he slipped a vertebrae and was relieved by Don Larsen, who was relieved by Harvey Haddix who was relieved by Dick Hall who was then relieved by Jim Palmer who faced just one batter, Jimmie Hall who hit a walk-off home run for the Twins. Those are some famous pitchers there. Meanwhile, John Klippstein got the win for his four pitch effort.

Harmon Killebrew suffers a dislocated left elbow in a collision with Baltimore’s Russ Snyder in the 6th inning while playing first base at Met Stadium. The original prognosis was that Killebrew would miss two weeks but the Twins slugger ends up missing 48 games. Killebrew was leading the AL in homers with 22 and had 70 RBI at the time of the injury. 1961 – The Twins are in Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium and will play two games today, the first will be a make-up game for the June 9th game that was rained out. The Orioles get on the board first when “Diamond Jim” Gentile takes Twins starter Don Lee deep to right field for the games first hit and first run. O’s starter, 21-year-old Chuck Estrada has a perfect game against the Twins for the first six innings, a no-hitter for seven, and a one-hit shut-out for eight innings. Twins starter Don Lee departs after seven good innings in which he allows just the one run on six hits, one walk, while striking out five. Twins reliever Bill Pleis pitches a clean eighth inning. The Twins start the ninth with a Zoilo Versalles single but Estrada retires Lenny Green and Harmon Killebrew and with two strikes on Bob Allison he singles to move Versalles to third. Joe Altobelli the Twins most recent call-up from Syracuse who had arrived at the ballpark just a couple hours earlier pinch-hits for Pleis and coaxes a walk from Estrada but not before Allison steals second. Now the Twins have the bases loaded and their second-string catcher Hal Naragon coming to the plate. Naragon delivers a double to right scoring two and Ted Lepcio works Estrada for another walk loading the bases and Baltimore skipper Paul Richards finally has seen enough and brings in Wes Stock who promptly gives up a double to Bill Tuttle and the Twins have four on the board before Stock finally gets Billy Martin, the ninth hitter of the inning for the Twins to lineout to first. Mele bring in Chuck Stobbs for the save but he gives up a quick walk and then Earl Robinson pinch-hits (for Whitey Herzog) a two-run home run and it is suddenly a 4-3 game. Mele wastes no time telling Stobbs he is done and bring in Ray Moore who retires the next three Oriole batters to give the Twins their sixth straight win in the 4-3 victory. The Twins had but five hits and all took place in the last two innings. Pleis (3-1) got the win and Moore notched his eighth save. Estrada (8-6) who struck out 10 was the tough luck loser. Game two starters were Dick Hall for the Orioles and Pedro Ramos for Minnesota. The Twins scored one in the third inning but the Orioles came back with two in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. The Twins regained the lead in the fourth when a Ted Lepcio two-run home run put them up 3-2. The O’s decided that 4 innings from Dick Hall was enough and brought in knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm. The Orioles scored again in the fifth and the games remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the  eighth inning when the Orioles pushed across what would turn out to be the winning run when pinch-hitter Dave Philley singled off Pedro Ramos with two on and two out to score the Orioles fourth and final run. Wilhelm retired Twins pinch-hitter Julio Becquer with two on and two out in the ninth to wrap up the 4-3 Baltimore win with 5 scoreless innings of relief and ended the Twins six game winning streak which as it turned out was the longest they would have all season. The future Hall of Fame knuckleballer upped his record to 8-5. Ramos pitched a complete 8 innings allowing all four runs and his record dropped to 8-12. Harmon Killebrew was 3 for 5 with a double and triple and Lenny Green also had 3 hits in 5 AB’s. With the DH split the Twins record stands at 46-57, good for seventh place. Box Score game two
