Twins pitchers combined to allow a season-high 15 hits, while the 11 runs allowed tied a season high (previously March 31 at KC). The struggling offense recorded seven hits, two from Ryan Jeffers. Byron Buxton went 1-for-3 and hit his first triple of the season, driving in a run on the play. Box Score

The offense recorded just two hits on singles from Donovan Solano and Michael A. Taylor. They also struck out 10 times, walked once and put just one man in scoring position. 2022 – The Twins lost to the Boston Red Sox by a score of 4-0, getting shut out for the second time this season, both coming in their last three games. Sonny Gray (0-1) was the starter and was dealt the loss, allowing two runs on one hit in 1.2 innings pitched, exiting the game in the second inning with a tight right hamstring which sent him to the IL the next day. Rookie Josh Winder made his second career appearance with 5.1 innings of relief, becoming the first Twins rookie to pitch at least 5.1 innings in relief since Kohl Stewart went six innings on September 2, 2018 versus Detroit Winder also became the first Twins pitcher to record at least 5.1 innings in relief within his first two career games since Pat Dean (5.1 IP) on May 16, 2016 at Detroit. The Twins anemic offense so far this year recorded five hits, three coming from Trevor Larnach (double, 2 singles), matching his career high. Randy Dobnak (0-3) relieved Thorpe and was issued the loss, after allowing five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Rocco Baldelli called on utility man Willians Astudillo to pitch the final inning and he kept the Angels scoreless in his second career appearance on the mound. The Twins had ten hits but the four double plays they hit into did not help the cause. Mitch Garver was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Josh Donaldson and Max Kepler also had two hits each. Box Score

2020 – A scheduled day off for the Twins. But we all know the season thus far has been postponed due to COVID-19, 19 games missed so far.

2019 – Twins starter Kyle Gibson had a shutout going at Target Field and a 1-0 lead after five innings but after he gave up a single, double, struck out a batter, walk and a single he was “outta there”. The Twins trailed 6-4 going into the ninth inning when Marwin Gonzalez led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run and Nelson Cruz followed with a walk. C.J. Cron forced out Schoop who was running for Cruz and Garver struck out leaving it up to Byron Buxton. Buxton doubled down the left field line but Cron was thrown out at home plate trying to score the tying run and the Blue Jays won their second straight game over the Twins, this time by a 6-5 score. Eddie Rosario, Jorge Polanco and Gonzalez all hit home runs for Minnesota. Box Score.

1970 – They say you can’t win them all and the visiting Twins found that to be true when they took their first “L” of the season in a 3-2 loss to the California Angels in Anaheim Stadium. Dave Boswell (0-1) started but lasted just 3.2 innings allowing 6 hits, 3 walks and 3 runs but just 1 earned. In the third inning the Angels scored their first two runs on back-to-back ground balls hit to Rod Carew at second who booted both of them but one was counted as a hit and the other an error. The Angels scored another of Boswell after the error. The Twins scored two in the eighth but came up a run short. Starter Rudy May (1-0) who went the first seven innings got the win in spite of giving up 6 hits and 5 walks and Ken Tatum went the last 2 innings for his second save of the year. Harmon Killebrew had 2 hits and Tony Oliva had the lone RBI. The Twins were 0 for 10 with RISP. Box Score

1969 – The Twins scored early and late and won the final three games of a strange road trip that had them playing two games in Kansas City, three games in Anaheim, one game in Oakland and one game in Seattle. They salvaged a road trip that started with four losses. The Twins scored three runs in the first and three more in the ninth to hold on to a 6-4 win that took the team out of the cellar for the first time this season. Twins starter Dean Chance struggled with his control walking five in five innings. Ron Perranoski pitched the final 1.1 innings for his second win of the road trip. Rod Carew who had missed the week-ends games was 4 for 5 with two doubles while Tony Oliva went three for four and the two accounted for half of the teams hits and didn’t seem to mind that it rained for the last three innings at Sick’s Stadium. 1965No game today, scheduled day off.

1963 – In an exciting 13-inning back and forth game played at Met Stadium, the Twins beat the Angels 11-10 on a sunny Tuesday afternoon with a game-time temperature of 73 degrees. The Twins use 8 pitchers but the Angels use 9 pitchers, tying the ML record for an extra-inning contest. Both teams scored two runs in the 11th inning and the game continued. In the bottom of the 13th inning with Twins runners at first and second, Eli Grba was brought in to pitch for the Angels and he gave Bill Tuttle an IBB but then proceeded to walk George Banks with the bases loaded forcing in the winning run. A walk-off walk, you can’t beat that. Bob Allison had a nice game for Minny going 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBI. The game lasted 4 hours and 41 minutes but only 6,273 fans were there to see it. I wonder how many were there when the game ended? Box Score

1962No Twins game, scheduled day off.

1961 – On the day of the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba, the Twins sweep the Orioles at Memorial Stadium 10-5 and 6-4 in the Twins first ever double-header. The Twins explode out of the gate in game 1 scoring 6 runs in the first inning when outfielder Bob Allison hits the Twins first ever grand slam home run and Orioles starter Chuck Estrada is sent to the showers without retiring a single batter. It takes three Oriole pitchers to get the Twins out in the first inning, primarily because six Twins batters get walked, two of the walks force in runs. Allison has a great game hitting two home runs and knocking in 7 with two runs scored to boot. Lenny Green also chipped in a home run and Pedro Ramos was credited with the win and as you might guess Estrada took the loss. Box Score game 1

The Twins have the Orioles where they want them in game 2 with a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth but close Ray Moore blows the save and the Orioles tie the game at 4-4. Note that Twins starter Jack Kralick started the ninth but Moore was brought in when Kralick retired the first batter but then allowed a single and a walk. The Twins go on to play their first extra inning affair in game 2 and win when Zoilo Versalles hits the Twins first extra inning home run, a 2-run shot in the 11th inning. Versalles was 4 for 6 with a run, a stolen base, and 3 RBI. Rookie pitcher Bill Pleis making his big league debut entered the game with the scored tied 4-4 with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners at the corners and retires Dave Philly to send the game into extra innings. Pleis also pitched a scoreless 10th inning and became the first Twins pitcher to earn a win in his major league debut. Box Score Game 2
