2024 – The Twins beat the Dodgers in a Wednesday afternoon get-away day game at Target Field by a score of 3-2. Chris Paddack was the Twins starter but did not factor into the decision, allowing two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings pitched. The bullpen (Kody Funderburk, Jorge Alcala, Brock Stewart, Griffin Jax and Steven Okert) combined to pitch 4.1 scoreless innings, while allowing four base-runners. Funderburk (1-0) got the win and Okert earned his first career save in what was his 232nd appearance. Edouard Julien recorded his first career multi-homer game, which included his third career leadoff home run. Carlos Correa cut down the potential tying run with an assist from short right field, throwing out Shohei Ohtani at home plate in the seventh inning. Correa’s throw registered at 92.2 mph, tied for second fastest by a Twins infielder in the Statcast Era. The win marked Rocco Baldelli’s 379th career managerial victory, which finally broke a tie with Gene Mauch, moving Baldelli into fourth place on the Twins all-time managerial wins list. After completing their first home-stand of the season with a record of 1-4 (0-2 vs. Cleveland and 1-2 vs. Los Angeles-NL), the Twins begin a seven game roadtrip in Detroit. Box Score
2023 – The Twins lost to the White Sox at Target Field by a score of 4-3. Kenta Maeda (0-2) was the starter and loser, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6 innings pitched, with no walks and three strikeouts. Chicago starter Dylan Cease (2-0) was the winner. All four runs allowed came in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Hanser Alberto three-run homer. The offense recorded just four hits, drew two walks, was HBP three times, struck out 13 times, went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. 2022 – The Twins beat the Seattle Mariners at Target Field by a score of 10-4, recording their first victory of the 2022 season. Bailey Ober (1-0) was the starter and winner, allowing four runs on four hits in 5 innings pitched with two walks, four strikeouts. The offense recorded 10 hits, six going for home runs by Byron Buxton (2), Carlos Correa, Jorge Polanco, Max Kepler and Gary Sánchez, who hit his fourth career grand slam. The Twins scored their first 13 runs of the season all via home run until a seventh inning Gary Sánchez RBI-double scored a run. It marked the most runs scored via home run to start a team’s season since 1900. (Elias Sports Bureau) Nine home runs are the most in Twins history in a three-game span to start a season. 2021 – The Twins lost to the Seattle Mariners at Target Field by a score of 4-3 in 10 innings, marking their third extra-innings loss this season in three extra innings games played. Michael Pineda was the starter but did not factor into the decision, allowing two runs on four hits in 6 innings pitched, with no walks and six strikeouts. Taylor Rogers who pitched the last two innings for the Twins was the losing pitcher, his first loss of the season. The offense recorded six hits, two from both Nelson Cruz and Byron Buxton. 2020 – The Twins would have been in Chicago today playing those young and highly hyped White Sox today but instead the season thus far has been postponed due to COVID-19. That makes 14 games missed thus far.
2019 – The Twins lost to the New York Mets 9-6 but even with the loss they finished their road trip with a 4-3 record. The Twins and starter Jake Odorizzi were coasting along with a 1-0 lead when the Mets jumped on Odorizzi and two Twins relievers for 6 runs on just 2 hits and 6 walks. The 6 walks in one inning set a new Twins record for walks allowed in one inning. The Mets built up their lead to 9-1 before the Twins bounced back to make it a 9-6 game. By the time the final numbers were posted on the scoreboard, five Twins pitchers had given out 10 free passes. 2018 – The Twins got on the board first and held for a 4-1 victory over last years champs the Houston Astros. Jake Odorizzi got his first win as a Minnesota Twins when he bested Dallas Keuchel on another cool night (39 degrees) at Target Field. Odorizzi allowed just one run on five hits in six innings. 1992 – The Minnesota Twins took 2 of 3 from the Milwaukee Brewers during the seasons first road-trip and now come home for their Home Opener to face MLB’s only undefeated 4-0 team the Texas Rangers who have been pounding the ball. But the Twins and Opening Day Ace Kevin Tapani await them at the Metrodome. The hometown Twins score first and have a 3-0 lead before the Rangers are able to score their lone run with a Ruben Sierra home run in the sixth. Bobby Witt (0-1) the Ranger starter departs the premise after 5 innings allowing three run on eight hits and takes the loss. Kevin Tapani (1-0) goes seven innings (108 pitches) for the win allowing just the one run on six hits while striking out six. Shane Mack the Twins lead off hitter goes 4 for 5 with a home run, a SB, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. 1982 – The Yankees trade relief pitchers Ron Davis and Paul Boris and shortstop Greg Gagne to the Twins for veteran infielder Roy Smalley and pitcher Gary Serum.
1980 – The Twins play the 1980 season Opener in Oakland again. Jerry Koosman had Opening Day honors for Minnesota and Rick Langford took the mound for Oakland. The Twins had a 5-0 lead until Kooz got into trouble in the seventh inning. Mike Marshall relieved him but that didn’t help as the A’s kept on hitting until they pushed 7 runs across the board and took a 7-5 lead. The Twins tied it up with two in the ninth to send the game into extra innings tied at 7-7. The tenth and eleventh innings were scoreless and in the twelfth inning Roy Smalley and Rick Sofield each hit solo home runs to put the Twins up 9-7. Doug Corbett in his major league debut pitched pitched 5 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit and striking out six was credited with his first big league win. Corbett was acquired by the Twins in the off-season from the Reds in the Rule 5 draft. Sal Butera also made his major league debut in this game. Box Score
1976 – Pitcher Andy Messersmith signed the first contract of baseball’s free-agency era, a three-year, $1 million deal with the Atlanta Braves.
1972 – ON STRIKE – For the first time in history, the major leagues failed to open because of a player strike, which started on April 1. The Twins were scheduled to play the Chicago White Sox at Met Stadium today but that obviously that did not happen. Four Twins games missed due to the strike so far.

1968 – After two postponements due to civil unrest causing dusk to dawn curfews and the Martin Luther King Jr. funeral the Minnesota Twins and Washing Senators were finally able to play their 1968 season opener in Washington D.C. at D.C. Stadium. The game turned out to be an old fashioned pitchers duel between Twins starter Dean Chance and Senators starter Camilo Pascual whom the Twins had traded to Washington following the 1966 season. The game as scoreless after five innings until Harmon Killebrew put the Twins on the board with a solo lead-off home run in the sixth inning. Bob Allison added a solo blast in the eighth inning to finish the scoring in the 2-0 Twins win. Chance went all the way for Minnesota for the win allowing just four hits while striking out eight. Tony Oliva went 3 for 4 with a double and a stolen base. Box Score

1962 – The Twins open the 1962 season with a 4-2 loss to the Kansas City A’s at Municipal Stadium. The A’s scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning, three of them coming on a Gino Cimoli home run off Twins starter Jack Kralick. Twins starter Jack Kralick took the loss and A’s starter Ed Rakow went the distance for the win in the 2 hour and 15 minute season opener for both clubs. Box Score
