Twins new manager to stress defense in 1976

It has been awhile since I posted some old articles from what was known back then as the “Baseball Bible”, or as most of us knew it, The Sporting News. So now and then I will dig through the archives and we can relive some baseball history.

Back when I was growing up The Sporting News was really the only way to keep up with baseball during the off-season. The Minneapolis and St. Paul papers did a good job keeping us abreast of Minnesota Twins news but nothing really about the rest of the teams. With no internet, podcasts, or MLB TV it was a long off season between the World Series ending and Spring Training beginning. I would be interested in your comments if these kinds of things interest you or not. I appreciate it.

After Frank Quilici was relieved of his managing duties when the 1975 Minnesota Twins season ended with a 76-83 record, owner Calvin Griffith offered him a broadcasting position which Quilici accepted. Griffith then gave Gene Mauch a three-year deal to manage the Twins starting in 1976.

German born Navy vet 65-68 and served aboard the Shangri La CVA-38. I run https://Twinstrivia.com, best MN Twins historical web site there is. Stop by daily and check out OTD in Twins history and much more. Live in Minnesota and Florida depending on what time of the year it is.

  1. That Gene Mauch story brought back memories for me. I was a very young Phillies fan in 1964 when Mauch was managing. I was absolutely overwhelmed by their super season until the last two weeks when we had to endure the “Phold of ’64.” So sad. Since I was soaking in a baseball failure, I switched to being a Mets fan which rewarded me with the 1969 “Miracle Mets.” I still have the newspaper from the day after they won the World Series.
Five years later I got my first job working for the Twins in Orlando, as their spring training public address announcer and other duties. In my third year, Gene Mauch was back. His demeanor as a manager seemed to be just what Cal Griffith wanted but the Royals were the hot team in those days. Mauch gave the Twins some good years.

  2. John,
Love it. Was a devote reader of TSN and have collection of many issues from the 50’s and 60’s.
Loved the sports cartoonists like Willard Mullin and others who drew very intriguing illustrations that told a story.
Have you made it to Florida yet and escaped the madness that is going on in
    Minneapolis?

    1. Yes, we drove down to Cape Coral in early December or we would be out there in the cold and snow protesting ICE. Being an immigrant myself I think I have a good understanding what they are going through.
I hear you guys might be in for a bunch of snow, hope it doesn’t get like my old and now deceased friend in Philly told me once “that the snow was so deep my rudder was dragging in the snow”. Stay safe, baseball is just around the corner.
