The Minnesota Twins have announced that Triple-A Saint Paul catcher Jair Camargo and High-A Cedar Rapids right-handed pitcher Cory Lewis as their minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week for week ten. Twins Rookie and DSL leagues began play on June 5.
Jair Camargo was acquired by Minnesota from Dodgers via trade with right-handed pitcher Kenta Maeda and cash, in exchange for right-handed pitcher Brusdar Graterol, outfielder Luke Raley and Competitive Balance B Pick in 2020 Draft on February 10, 2020.
Camargo, 23, hit .375 (6-for-16) with four home runs, 10 RBI and a 1.537 OPS in four games for the Saints this week. On the season the 5’10” (210) Barranquilla, Colombia native has 9 home runs and 25 RBI while hitting .228 but there are also those 54 strikeouts in 148 PA’s.
Cory Lewis was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 9th round of the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of California, Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA). MLB Pipeline has Lewis currently rated as the Twins 30th best prospect. More info on Lewis can be viewed here. One of the unique things about Lewis according to MLB Pipline is:
Perhaps the biggest development early on in Lewis’ pro career has his been commitment to throwing his knuckleball. It was more of a novelty in college, but he’s been throwing it more during his first season and getting a lot of swings and misses with it.
The stocky 6’5″ Lewis started his first season in pro ball with the Low-A Fort Myers Mighty Mussels and on June 5 was bumped up to the High-A Cedar Rapids Kernels. Lewis, 22, made his first start for the Kernels on Thursday at Dayton, pitching 5 shutout innings with three hits allowed, one walk and eight strikeouts, earning the win. With the Mighty Mussels he had pitched 39.1 innings, given up just 26 hits and struck out 55 while walking 15.
