Twins pitchers you may not have heard of

The Minnesota Twins have gone through a lot of pitchers over the years, 476 pitchers have taken the bump wearing the Twins uniform from 1961-2021. Many of these pitchers have come and gone over the years and many Twins fans have either never heard of them or have long since forgotten them.

Today I just want to take a look at pitchers that have pitched for Minnesota but have no record, meaning that they have neither been credited with a win or a loss for the Minnesota Twins in a game in which they appeared. Turns out the leader in this “category” for the Minnesota Twins is Erik Schullstrom who appeared in 46 games without earning a win or a loss.

Schullstrom, a big 6’5″ right-hander was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles as the PTBNL when Minnesota traded Mike Pagliarulo to the Orioles on August 15, 1993. The Orioles had used Schullstrom as a starter and reliever but the Twins decided that the Bullpen was the best spot for Schullstrom. He appeared in 9 games in 1994 earning his one and only career save in his third big league appearance against the Milwaukee Brewers. He finished his first big league season with a 0-0 record and a 2.77 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings.

In 1995 Schullstrom spent almost the entire season with the Twins appearing in 37 games but almost always in games when the Twins were losing or had a big lead. He had control issues and in 47 innings he walked 22 and struck out just 21 batters. When the Twins season ended in 1995 so did Schullstrom’s big league career.

The Twins granted Schullstrom his free agency and in 1996 Schullstrom spent the summer in the Baltimore Orioles minor league system and then pitched in Japan with Nippon in 1998-1999 and with Hiroshima in 2001-2002 before retiring from pro ball.

Turns out that there are 80 pitchers that fall into this category over the years not counting position players that have pitched. You can see the entire list here if you want to spend a few minutes going down memory lane.
