2023 – The Twins beat the Tigers at Comerica Park by a score of 4-1, winning their third-straight game and moving one game over .500. Kenta Maeda (1-4) made his return from the IL, pitching 5 scoreless innings, with three hits allowed, two walks and eight strikeouts. It marked Maeda’s first win since August 14, 2021 vs. Tampa Bay. Jovani Moran (1 K), Brock Stewart (3 K), Griffin Jax (1 K) and Jhoan Duran (3 K) all pitched in relief as the staff finished with 16 strikeouts, tied for their second most this season (17 on 4/8 vs. HOU). The offense scored three runs in the second inning, highlighted by a Royce Lewis solo home run and a Max Kepler two-run homer. Kepler finished with two of the Twins’ six hits. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli was ejected for arguing a no-balk call and later Twins outfielder Michael A. Taylor was ejected along with assistant hitting coach Derek Shomon. It was the first career ejection for Taylor and Shomon. It has been over 20 years, April 30, 2003 since the team has had three or more players ejected in one game. 2022 – The Twins beat the Guardians at Target Field by a score of 1-0, snapping their three-game losing streak. Devin Smeltzer (4-1) was the starter and winner, pitching 6 shutout innings with three hits allowed, no walks and three strikeouts. Joe Smith (1.0), Jhoan Duran (1.1) and Caleb Thielbar (0.2) combined for 3 scoreless innings of relief, as Thielbar earned his first career save in his 213 career game. The offense recorded just five hits (as did Cleveland) with the game’s only run coming on a Nick Gordon solo home run in the third inning, Gordon’s second homer of the season. According to Elias, Gordon is the second player in Twins/Senators franchise history (1901-present) to start in the ninth spot in the batting order and hit a home run in a 1-0 victory. The first was pitcher “Long Tom” Hughes, who connected in the 10th inning in a road win by the Washington Senators over the St. Louis Browns on August 3, 1906. The Colorado Rockies are on deck. 2020 – The Twins should be playing the Astros in Houston but nothing has changed, all the games this season have been postponed/cancelled due to COVID-19. 81 games missed so far.
MLB and the MLBPA finally reached agreement on playing baseball in 2020 with a 60 game season. Players would report to “spring Training 2.0” on July 1 and games would begin on July 23 or 24 under a bunch of new rules and regulations.
The Minnesota Twins announced today the signing of their first round pick, infielder Aaron Sabato from the University of North Carolina, whom they selected with the 27th overall pick in the 2020 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound first baseman set a North Carolina freshman record for home runs in a season with 18 in 2019 (the eighth-most ever by any UNC player). Sabato also led the team in batting average (.343), hits (79), doubles (25), RBI (63) and slugging percentage (.696), while posting an OPS of 1.149. He had 44 extra-base hits, which tied for the second-highest single-season total in Tar Heels history, matching Kyle Seager (2008) and Dustin Ackley (2009). Sabato, 21, was also named 2019 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Co-National Freshman of the Year, First Team All-American and Freshman All-American; Baseball America and D1 Baseball First Team Freshman All-American and Third Team All-American; NCBWA National Freshman Hitter of the Year; ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-American; Perfect Game First Team Freshman All-American; ACC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-ACC. He was hitting .292 (19-for-65) with six doubles, seven home runs, 18 RBI, 20 runs scored, 22 walks and a .478 on-base percentage in 19 games as a sophomore for the Tar Heels before the 2020 season was shortened due to COVID-19. Sabato was ranked as the 41st-best prospect in the 2020 Draft by MLB.com and 35th by Baseball America. The Rye Brook, NY native attended the Brunswick School in Greenwich, CT where he was ranked as the fourth-best player in the state and the 35th-best shortstop in the country by Perfect Game. His father played baseball at Mercy College, while his brother, Teddy, was on the UNC baseball roster in 2017 and currently plays at Manhattan College.
According to ESPN, “The Minnesota Twins signed first baseman Aaron Sabato on Tuesday to a deal that included a $2.75 million bonus for the first-round draft pick from North Carolina. Sabato was taken with the 27th overall pick earlier this month. He signed for about $180,000 above the value for his draft slot assigned by Major League Baseball.”
2019 – The Twins lost to the Royals on a Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium by a score of 6-1. Michael Pineda (4-4) was the starter and loser, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5 innings pitched. The offense recorded nine hits, four from Luis Arraez, marking a season/career-high. Eddie Rosario hit his team-leading 20th home run in the fourth inning. The loss dropped the Twins record to 50-27 and their lead over second place Cleveland dropped to 8 games as the Twins now head home for a quick 3-game series against the Tampa Rays. 2018 – The game at Target Field starts out with a bang when Joe Mauer singles and Eddie Rosario hits his seventeenth home run of the season and the Twins take a quick 2-0 lead after one inning. The Rangers take it in stride and score the next nine runs to take a 9-2 lead before the Twins add-on four more run but still lose 9-6 in spite of having the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth. Logan Morrison also had a home run and catcher Mitch Garver had 3 hits. Twins starter Jake Odorizzi did not have it and allowed 6 runs in 1.2 innings. Box Score

1980 – The first place Kansas City Royals (40-26) were in town to play the (27-38) Twins at the Met and only 7,525 fans showed up to watch the game and those that did had low expectations. Twins starter Jerry Koosman (6-6) had other ideas and pitched a CG in a 4-1 Twins win. Kooz allowed 10 hits and a walk but struck out 15 Royals which tied a Twins team record. The Twins scored three times in the third inning on a Butch Wynegar single that scored one and Roy Smalley followed with a two-run home run. It was a lead the Twins would not relinquish. 1966 -No game today. The Twins however are in Denver beating up on their AAA farm club 9-4.
1961 – Cookie Lavagetto is axed as manager of the Twins. Sam Mele, 38, takes control of the club. As a coach, the Astoria, New York native filled in as the skipper of the club while Lavagetto took a seven-game leave of absence earlier in the month. The Twins win their first game under Mele by shutting out the Yankees 4-0 on Camilo Pascual’s six-hitter. Harmon Killebrew was the hitting star with a 3 for 4 day with a home run and a double and knocked in all four Minnesota runs. Box Score
