2020 – The Twins take a day off to travel from Los Angeles to Anaheim to start a week-end series with the Angels starting tomorrow but as we all know the season thus far has been postponed due to COVID-19. Counting today it means we have missed 31 games so far.

Wayne Hattaway and Ron Gardenhire in 2014.

It was a sad day today as Twins Territory and all of baseball heard that baseball lifer Wayne Hattaway passed away today at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer. The “Big Fella” started out as a batboy at the age of 12 with the Mobile Bears (a Dodgers minor league team). Wayne joined the Minnesota Twins organization in 1963 and worked in their organization doing everything from clubhouse attendant, equipment manager to a trainer at every level of play except AAA through 2018. The passing of Wayne Hattaway is the end of an era. It is my honor to have called him a friend.

Houston starter Gerrit Cole gives up a lone hit in seven innings of pitching while striking out 11 ups his record to 2-4 . Twins starter Michael Pineda took the loss (2-2) when he gives up five runs in five innings. At the end of April the Twins record stands at 17-10. Box Score

The Twins finally tried coach Jeff Pickler’s four-man outfield against Justin Smoak. 2003 – Lots of action at the Metrodome tonight for the 15,282 fans in attendance as the Twins hosted the vising Tampa Bay Devil Rays beating them 8-5. The starters were Brad Radke for the home team and the visitors went with Seth McClung. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected almost immediately, Brad Radke and acting manager Scott Ullger were asked to leave in the sixth inning making Steve Liddle the acting manager after a HBP. Liddle was quoted as saying that Scotty got the win and I got the save. In the bottom half of the sixth Devil Rays manager Lou Pinella and relief pitcher Nick Bierbrodt were ejected for throwing behind a batter. Each team hit two batters in the 2 hour and 26 minute game. Radke (2-3) got the win and McClung (2-1) took the loss. Torii Hunter hit a three-run home run, his third of the season. Jacque Jones had three hits including a double and Todd Sears also had a double with two RBI. The Twins finished the month of April 11-14 and are 12-14 on the season and in third place 6 games out. 1973No game today, scheduled day off.

1969 – A 6-4 win over the Seattle Pilots doesn’t sound that exciting but it was interesting to say the least. Dean Chance was scheduled to start for the Twins but couldn’t get loose so Tommy Hall was the emergency starter and he went six innings striking out nine allowing three earned runs and was credited with the win. In addition, Hall had 2 hits including a double in 3 at bats and scored twice. The Pilots lost a run in the fourth inning when Tommy Davis reached on an E-6, stole second and scored on a single. Killebrew who was playing third asked for the ball and Davis was called out for missing third base. With the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning Rod Carew stole home safely for the third time in as many tries and for the ninth time in as many tries in his six-year pro career. While Carew was stealing home, Oliva was stealing third and Killebrew was stealing second for what is believed to be the Twins first triple steal. Carew had 2 hits, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. When all was said and done, the Twins won their fifth straight to up their record to 13-7 and maintain a 1 1/2 game lead over the second place A’s as they put April in the rear view mirror. A pretty good month considering they started it 0-4.  Box Score

  1. I became a twins fan when they first came to Minnesota. I was sad when they built the Metrodome, only got to go there once. I wasn’t a fan. And now at Target field I got to go once. always a twins fan, went to many games in Milwaukee fun times, still wish we were in the same league, and played by the same rules. I know the names of most of the players, Maybe not the new ones this year, but will get to know them. I did see Mickey Mantle play out at the old Met Stadium.

    1. Thank you for the note Connie. I always enjoy hearing from people that stop by the site and share their memories of how long they have been Twins fans and interesting and exciting players they watched or games that they saw. It is harder now to know the players then it was back in our youth, back then players stayed with the same team for years and now that is not the case due to free agency and things like that. Stay healthy and enjoy the Twins.
