2023 – The Twins beat the Royals at Kauffman Stadium by a score of 7-4, notching their first sweep of the season. Joe Ryan (1-0) was the starter and winner, pitching 6 innings and allowing one run on three hits, with two walks and six strikeouts. The offense recorded 13 hits, three apiece from Trevor Larnach and Joey Gallo. Gallo had three extra-base hits, including a double and two home runs. Buxton ended the first inning with a 5-4-3 double play, marking his first ground ball double play since August 18, 2020 vs. Milwaukee, when he twice rolled into a 5-4-3 double play. It snapped a streak of 712 plate appearances over 172 games without a ground ball double play, the longest streak by games in Twins/Senators history. Buxton hit 55 home runs between ground ball double plays, which is a major league record.  Box Score

2021Scheduled day off for the Twins. Major League Baseball announced today that it will relocate the 2021 All-Star Game and MLB Draft, originally scheduled to take place in Atlanta, to a to-be-determined location. The decision comes a little more than a week after the passage of S.B. 202, a Georgia law that President Joe Biden criticized earlier this week, saying that it will restrict voting access for residents of the state. Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement that the decision to move the All-Star Game was “the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport” and was made after consultation with teams, former and current players, the MLB Players Association and The Players Alliance, among others.

2020 No Twins vs A’s game at Target Field in the home opener today due to COVID-19 – 8 games missed. There are rumors circulating on the internet that MLB would like to start playing again on July 4 but nothing is obviously confirmed.

2019 – The Twins hit the road for the first time this year and play the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Down 4-3 after eight innings the Twins score one run in the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 on an Eddie Rosario single that scores Jorge Polanco who had doubled to start the inning. The Twins then score again in the 10th on a Nelson Cruz single off Brad Boxberger that scores Astudillo and the Twins are up 5-4. Blake Parker shuts down the Royals in the bottom of the 10th for the save. Cruz had 2 hits including a double and knocked in 3 and three other Twins had two hits each. Some interesting facts about this game: you can call this the “berger” game as Trevor Hildenberger got the win and Brad Boxberger took the loss. Taylor Rogers (2018-2019) extended his scoreless inning streak to 28.2 innings tying Johnny Klippstein (1965-1966) for third on the Twins all-time scoreless inning streak list, only to be snapped on an Adalberto Mondesi inside-the-park home run in the eighth inning. J.C. Romero (2004) had a 36 inning scoreless streak and Joe Nathan (2004) had a 29 inning streak. The Twins are 3-1 and in first place by a game.  Box Score

Lance Lynn (0-1) made his Twins debut, allowing five runs (all in the 1st inning), on three hits in 4.0 innings pitched, including a grand slam by Colin Moran. Other than Brian Dozier homering for the third time in his last two games, the Twins offense didn’t do much. Box Score

2007 – The Twins open their 47th season of baseball at home in the Metrodome against the Baltimore Orioles with a nice crowd of 48,711 looking on just a few days after long time Twins announcer Herb Carneal had passed away from congestive heart failure. Johan Santana had starting honors for the Twins and the Orioles went with Erik Bedard. The Twins scored first to grab a 2-0 lead and then trailed briefly by a 3-2 score before takinging the lead and going on to a 7-4. Santana left the game with a lead after six innings in which he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits but that turned out to be good enough for the win. Bedard took the loss. Luis Castillo had 3 hits including a double, Justin Morneau also had 3 hits with a home run and Torii Hunter had 2 hits, a home run and a double. The game was broadcast on KSTP 1500 after the Twins left their radio partner of 46 years, WCCO 830 on the AM dial after last season. Box Score
