Talkin’ Baseball – Twins version written about 1995. Terry Cashman wrote Talkin’ Baseball as a tribute to 50’s baseball during the baseball strike in 1981. The song was spun off into many team specific versions like the Twins version here.

The Seattle Pilots (64-98) only existed in 1969 before moving to Milwaukee where they became the Brewers. The Pilots had a number of players that either had played in Minnesota or would play in Minnesota including Don Mincher, Rich Rollins, Ron Clark, Danny Walton, Sandy Valdespino, Mike Marshall, and Garry Roggenburk. Tom Kelly was a Pilots 8th round draft pick in 1968. The Seattle Pilots theme song was so different from any other I have ever heard and I had to put it out here.

Produced by WCCO radio (Minneapolis, Minn.), “Last Of The Ninth: Twins Pennant Drive ’65” is an audio delight, including the pivotal moments, plays, and personalities that drove the 1965 Minnesota Twins to the American League Championship. Legendary Twins broadcasters Ray Scott, Herb Carneal and Halsey Hall tell the story in a narrative that crackles with excitement and joy. Provided through Soundcloud courtesy of one of my favorite Minnesota Twins blog sites, Classic Minnesota Twins. There are two parts and it is GREAT listening as you relive the 1965 American league championship season.

  1. Just a couple of questions about specific games, a double hitter on August 16, 1978, Twins against the Kansas City Royals at Met Stadium. (The first game was a reschedule from rain.) First game started at 5pm. Is there pre-game radio time usually, and how long? And how much time between games, usually? THANKS. Research for a novel.

    1. Thank you for stopping by the site Tysa. To help get you an answer I went to Stew Thornley, an expert on the subject. Stew has written numerous books about baseball, has followed the Twins since 1961 and is currently the Minnesota Twins official score keeper. Here are his comments on your questions.

Good questions. Some of this will be from memory, but I did check the
newspaper on the doubleheader date. The radio listings said 4:50 for
Twins baseball on WCCO Radio, so it looks like they came on 10 minutes
before the scheduled start. And back then, I recall they started pretty close to the top of the hour or on the half hour.

I looked at August 8 that season, when the Twins televised a home game,
which started at 7:30. WCCO Radio was listed as 7:20 for the start of
their broadcast. WTCN TV listed 7:30. That was in TV and Radio
highlights. I couldn’t find the standard TV schedule grid they used
back then. If so, I’d try to see if there was anything like Twins
      Pre-game listed at 7.

In the 1960s, TV had pre-game shows like The Harmon Killebrew Show in
the half-hour preceding the game. WCCO had shows hosted by players,
such as Bob Allison, and there was, of course, Fan in the Stands with
      Randy Merriman.

Back then, I recall they said something like 20 minutes between games
and they seemed to stick close to it. They wouldn’t have starters for
Game 2 warm up until Game 1 ended. Maybe they did if Game 1 was a
blowout, but I’d think they wouldn’t get the Game 2 starters going until they knew for sure. Then the starters just started throwing in the bullpen, not doing long toss on the field like they do now, so the home starter could probably be ready within 20 minutes if he started throwing as soon as the first game ended.

      Hope this helps you.

      1. Hey there, JJ,

Thank you so much! This was extremely helpful. Sorry for the delayed reply. I just stumbled onto your answer. Really appreaciate the research you did. It helps me be more authentic about a Vietnam Vet’s character in my novel set in 1978, who was a die-hard Rod Carew fan.

        Best,
        Tysa

  2. My Grandfather and brother were interviewed by Louie Anderson on TV before the game 2 world series game started in 1987….the tape has been damaged and wondering if anybody else has this recorded or an idea where I might obtain a recording? Thanks, Scott

  3. Does anyone have the long version of the original 60’s Twins jingle with the instrumental sections as it was played on radio? It was definitely longer than the 0:50 version found on You Tube, maybe a minute and a half or closer to 2 minutes, as it had to be long enough for local announcers to read billboards for local co-sponsors. I remember hearing it over KDAL in Duluth back then.

  4. I love this site.

My fondest and clearest childhood memories are of going to Monster Jam and MN Twins games in the Metrodome. I also remember 1 year going with my high school class to rollerblade in the Metrodome with thousands of other high school kids.
